Just want to introduce my self!

Hey guys my name is Nate and i will soon be the owner of a 89 240sx fastback. The car looks great and drives fine except for the fact that it has a little over the 200,000 miles.. well that would be just for a couple of months until i get the SR20 in it. I am familiar with the SR20 my cousin and I just finished dropping one on his coupe. But I know that the previous owner was an old guy who really took care of her. I just wanted to know if you guys could help out what do you guys recommend I should use for my oil because as soon as i get it i know i am going to do keep her well mentained. Also the best oil filter should be OEM right?
Well I am glad to join Club240 because I just came from another 240sx site and I have to say the people just werent what I was expecting. Thanks!

welcome bro.. thanks for coming

as far as oil you wanna run 10w-30 normally.. if this is a very high milage motor stay away from full synthetic the additives will expose any leaks that you may have.. and filters i generally run fram or pure one

as far as the chassis its good bro as long as you dont have rust in the vital points such as frame rail your good.. my car has to have over 23x,xxx miles

fram is what i use for any kind of filter, i've read some complaints about fram filters but fram is what i've come to trust.

for oil, on a high mileage engine you defiantly don't want a synthetic oil as already mentioned. mobil 1 has a full synthetic for high mileage engines but it's still synthetic. casrol gtx should do just fine.

you could get away with a blend but even that may push the bar a bit

Welcome dude,
I'm not gonna pretend to be an expert on oil, but my dad is a mechanic and has been for his whole life and swears by Quaker State because it comes out dirtier.

that's funny because a guy at work swears by quaker state too but because he says it comes out just as clean as when he put it in.

either way quaker state must be good if they sponsor race cars.

lol my dad explained it like this- if the oil comes out dirty it's doing it's job and removing all the build up from the engine. Funny how they like it for opposite reasons though.

yeah that's what it should be doing, but the guy at work is not very bright so i didn't waste my time explaining it to him.

that's also the reason a high mileage engine will not benefit from a synthetic oil. if all the build up is removed leaks may develop. some build up is needed to keep leaks from occurring

however if the engine has had synthetic oil from the beginning there's no need to worry about using it when the engine has 100K miles or so.

welcome to the forum. glad i never leaked when i ran royal purple. ive got 174k on my motor and i thought synthetic would help maintain it better. but then i found out my compression was way low so i didnt bother to buy expensive oil. now i run advanced autoparts 10w40 and a can of restore. keep it thick for my 149 psi on each cylinder. haha

Thanks guys for the welcome and the help...hopefully I will get her next weekend because rite now I just got from driving her around from the owner and I might say the engine sounds strong and it runs a little loud due to the fact that its old. lol. So hopefully I will get some pics up and shes got minor defects but good thing no spoiler so no rust on the hatch and she looks so good just sitting there on the guys driveway....man i cant wait.

Just so you know, the 240 has a naturally loud engine. Look at the reviews by automotive writers from when it was brand new, and one of their major complaints was a loud engine.

I would stay away from Fram, for oil filters I've always trusted OEM. The fram oil filters have cardboard end-caps for the filter element, cheap plastic by-pass valves and flimsy anti-drainback valves which is more than enough to keep me away from these filters. As for oil, people will tell you many things but the cold hard facts can be found on this forum. It's full of oil analysis', information on shearing and moly counts and brand to brand comparisons. It's all here.
