New guy in SC

Well I came across a good deal on a 1992 240x SE and I couldn't pass it up. I got it for 320 dollars, paid the guy and drove it home Well it had a 5 speed swap done to it and the guy didn't know how to get it to start with the key and bypass the neutral safety and the timing chain rattled. Did the neutral safety bypass in his yard and started it up and drove it home. Well I got it home and stated to do the timing chain removal process and when I took the front cover off I was suprised to see the upper timing guide mostly gone. After looking around some more I found out that the lower guides had been beaten up and was cracked so I decided to replace them and thats where I am at tonight. I am in the process of removing the oil pan to get the lower front cover off. I have been searching around on here and researching some things but I am not new to cars by anymeans. I also have a 1998 Eclipse RS with a turbo, built block with higher compression, MSnS, E85, etc. I have a 1991 Talon TSI AWD with a 6 bolt engine, 4 bolt swapped rear end, Eagle 100mm crank, eagle h rods, wiseco 9:1 pisons(2.3L) etc. So far the only major problem with the 240 is that it dies when I push the clutch in riding down the road getting ready to stop, but starts right back up, and the timing chain rattles, but I am fixing the rattle now. Check out my flickr page to see some photos. Sorry but I have been very busy lately and will try and get some more shots of the 320 dollar 240sx

Welcome bro..

good stuff, however, you want to remove the chain guides. They are not suppose to be on the engines anymore. It was a recall by Nissan for the reasons you just explained and later removed on the later KA's

Yeah man I realize that, I am actually talking about replacing the lower timing guides unless thats the ones that don't need replacing. I know the upper and side guides on the cam chain get removed but doesn't the crank chain need new guides? And thanks about the shop, its a nice place but its full at the moment. I need to get some space opend up for future projects. I'm either going to part out the 1g dsm and sell my bike and pick up a FD3S or start putting the 1g back together to be an AWD track monster .

So take out the lower guide near the crank pulley?! Obviously just the slack side right?

yea, both guides were proven to be an issue. they become brittle and break off and can cause lots of damage.

write-up i did on them:

I see that one but I am talking about the ones in the lower cover, not the upper cover. Still take them off?

Yeah, I am talking about the lower guides at the bottom, they are cracked and need to be replaced so I am going to replace them with new ones, I planned on leaving the ones out that are up top. Also, the head gasket ripped one side in half when I was removing the lower cover, I was going to just put some good Nissan gasket maker on it and put it back on there, do you think it will be ok? I don't see why not because there is no real pressure on that part of the head gasket but I just want to be sure. Thanks!
