Talking Newb Here

Hey guys, whats up?

Well, first of all, I know there's an intro. forum, but I have a question too, so I thought I'd put it here Mods.

First comes first tho. I'm 19 now, in college, and have worked my *** off. First I had a 1995 Accord the parents bought me. I modded it with boltons and some minor visual things, nothing major. Then I saved forever and sold that and am currently driving a 2000 BMW 323Ci (yes, I bought it all by myself). Well, I've decided that it's way too expensive for how slow it is heh. So I think I'm gonna get a 240SX, 1997-1998, and do the SR20 swap, and possibly the S14.5 front end conversion.

So here's the quetion, very general though, sorry. I want to do this, but I only have a half decent knowlege of cars. I don't think an engine swap would be too hard, and I'm sure I could do it, but I don't want to take any chances. I'm willing to spend a little more for peace of mind. I'm in Alabama, but can go to Atlanta, I assume there is a ton more support there. Where can I get the work done? And what should I get as far as engine, tranny?, LSD?. should I get a front clip?, or not because doesn't this year 240SX look the same as the S14 Silvia?

Thanks!
-John

First, there is a New Members Forum for this...

Second, engine swaps are not as easy as they sound...Usually.

Third, you are aware that JDM engine swaps are 99.9% ILLEGAL?

Fourth, welcome

if you're not sure pay someone to do it right.
front clips come with everything you'll need, highly reccommended. If you just buy an engine tranny and ecu you'll generally find yourself searching for parts. SR20's are technically illegal in the US of A, so if you can get away with it depends on how strict your state is. Get a full sr20 clip, and search for some closebye shops, post a thread in the area forums perhaps for some help. Use the search button for LSD and you should find some answers.

Welcome, and good luck!

Dr.

Thanks. Yeah, I'm in Alabama. That means two things. 1)No emissions, I won't get caught. But... 2)No shops that know anything. I think I'll travel to Atlanta, if there's even anything there.

I figured the engine was illegal, but so is everything else.

welcome to the boards.

- good luck w/the hunt; 97-98 S14's are a little harder to find than any other (since so few were made). and it appears that 70% or more were autos...
- i agree w/these guys. get a full front clip and if ur not sure u can do it (and do it right), take it somewhere. i believe there are several shops in the Atlanta area that can hook u up.
- u are aware that the "S14.5" conversion (i don't like that name, btw; there's no such thing as an S14.5; but i digress) is an S14 w/an S15 front end, right? the only way u could get the body panels and the engine in the front clip would be to get an S15 front clip (and S15 stuff don't come cheap). it would be best to get an S13 or S14 front clip and the S15 front end conversion kit separately.

Yeah, I knew all the things you said about the conversion. I decided to not get it because it's so expensive, and the newest 240 looks good as is.

there's a 240 group local to the Atl area 240's Over Atlanta. while the website doesn't have much info (or a forum for that matter), i think u can contact the site's admin and he should be able to tell u what's what. i dunno, it beat's the hell outta driving all the way out there and asking around about shops...
