yea ry it is used to park with a manual car but its also a secondary braking system seperate from the hydrolic system just incase the hydrolic system fails even if it dosnt stop the car as quickly it will stop the car or atleast slow you down some in an accident w/o brakes

I have never heard of anyone having to use one in an emergency, as the only time you would really use it is if your brake system failed. It is made for that purpose though. I have never heard anyone except maybe my sister call it a parking brake, though according to wikipedia you can call it either. So though you both are right, E-Brake is such a better name than parking brake.

No, it was designed for parking the car, not stopping it in an emergency. Ramos is right, even if you have an automatic the law in some places says you still must use the parking brake when you are parked.

the law also states that every car must have a secondary braking system independant of the primary braking system incase the primary system fails.

and yes i have used it as an emergency example my friends 1996 buick eighty-eight busted a steel brake line so i had to use the e-brake and what was left of the brakes in order to make it to my shop lol

So does that mean we are both right? I mean, the FSM does call it a parking brake.
