Newbie with problem...

Hey guys/girls, I'm the proud owner of a 89 240sx hatchback in white. There is a problem with the transmission so i got it pretty cheap. I plan to swap in a sr20 later on but i am trying to get this Tranny to work. Let me explain...

Car starts up fine, idle was alittle high when i bought it, around 1200 but i got it down to 850 now. Patched up a couple of hoses that were leaking air. Now, when i put the car in gear, any gear, nothing really happens. I hear the idle slightly change but it seems the tranny is not engaging to the engine. It goes into gear fine but it just won't move. I'm trying to buy a new hydraulic lift and jack stands before the weeks end so i can see what's going on under the car. A mechanic friend of mine says that it is possibly an electrical issue or replacing of a cable or something. I also doubt that the tranny is dead. If anyone has had similar problems, it would be greatly appreciated. I'm located in South Florida btw.
