Cheapo drop route
Had a friend of mine decide to see how cheap it would be to lower his ride, I personally always went with Tein springs but he just doesn't have as much money, he went with some 40 buck springs off ebay and they basically look exactly like this

his problem though is the springs width is way larger than his OEM Springs, do you think he would run into problems trying to install them on his stock struts with such a big open area around the springs where his OEM used to seat?

Time and again, people who buy that "universal type" Honda-derived coilover sleeve setup has been.... suckered.
Those coilover sleeves will actually RAISE the car if you were to just take out the stock springs and put those sleeves in. We've tried 2 kinds on 240's and they were a complete waste of time and effort.
Honestly, not to sound like an *** - but nowadays if anyone considers putting those on a 240, they're better off not lowering the car until they can afford something that actually works - like a good set of springs (note: not those $50-80 DZ or _____ racing springs on Ebay either) or coilovers.
So yeah... your friend got a bad deal - and got what he paid for

I cut corners on my first car and ended up Effin my suspension even more...turns out i had to not only replace the struts, springs, and tires i also had to replace the strut mounts $250 for that plus $30 each time i had to get the bastard alligned. Save money untill you can afford the better suspension.
Thats what I did. Cut the springs. Ended up bein a good thing tho. Motivated me to order struts, springs, Nismo upper mounts, hard tie rods....etc pretty much everything suspension. I've got almost $1500 in suspension sitting around now, and I am waiting to put it all in at once, and get 1 alignment.
So you guys are sayin that the stuff offa ebay isnt worth it because the quality/function of the items suck? If so you guys saved me a lotta money i was just about to get DZ lowering springs and the same exact coilovers that that kid got offa ebay. But i guess im just gunna have to wait and save up for the teins.
Purchasing a coilover setup is benefitial in many ways:
Easy Camber adjustment, ride height, and dampening.
They are also valved to match the spring rates you purchase. Not generic valving for any springrate.
A valve job usually holds 2k up or down. So if you get 10k/8k you can go 2k up or down from there without a revalve.

Coilovers are also very stiff. You could also look into a preset drop spring that is specific for our chassis and a good shock.
That combo would get you some great results.
Again if you shorten the stroke past the preset value from the factory you are going to shorten the life of the shock and make your ride horrendous.
Sometimes too much is horrible.
What are your drop goals?
What wheels are you going to run?
What bodykit?
This all comes together.........

Seems like a lot of people looking into getting full coilovers (i.e. TEIN, JIC, etc.) for the first time do not want to accept the fact that coilovers are a lot stiffer than a spring and shock combo. The think that going with a spring and shock combo is inferior because coilovers cost more. True, coilovers are made with performance in mind and have more adujestments than a spring and shock combo, but if you're mainly daily driving your car, IMO a spring a shock combo is a lot better for public roads (honestly, how many people who buy full coilovers use them on the track more than on the street?) two cents
I have a 1996 Acura Integra Sedan that I drive with my 2 children and my wife.
It has H&R drop springs and tokiko adjustable shocks. The setup rocks. It is stiffer than stock but not at the level of my 240s.
Now the 240s were god awful on the street. They were and are quick/fast but they had close to no complience. Kazama motor mounts, tranny toys, bushings, cage bla bla bla made the car a huge vibrator.
People said they could feel the pistons go up and down.
If you are getting coilovers be prepped to have a stiff ride. I have driven in cars with the Silks and loved their lower dampening settings.
I dunno. Don't you guys have local crews to take test drives in their rides?

to bad you're not in SoCal... we have cars in our group with:
1) Tein Type Flex + EDFC
2) Tein S-Tech and KYB AGX
3) Tein Type HE's
4) RS-R Race and KYB AGX
5) RS-R Race and Koni Sports
6) Bone stock, no swaybar (LOL Edgar!)
it's interesting how different the ride quality is with all 6... not to mention more differences when you factor in ride heights (for us coilover guys) and dampening settings (for all of us)
