i got the rust on the back of my hatch. i was wondering for a beginner how hard would that be to weld or do you recomend getting someone else to do it? i've never welded before figured this might be a good time to learn.

 

if it's the hatch itself, in some cases it's more convenient to just replace it.

Welding isn't hard, but it's also not as easy as crayons. Seek someone who's done it before.

 

have a pro do it... put in patch panels. if you want to work with it, than do the bondo and paint prep

 

yeah i want to work on this car hands on as much as possible but i think this one would be better left to a pro

 

Then again...look on here, there's always parts for sale. See if you can find a hatch on here, and practice welding on your current one. Only way to learn and get better is to practice so if you could that'd be great. But if you can't get another hatch or don't have access to a welder and safety equipment, a shop's just a phone call away.

 

i have a 91 and the hatch on there isn't in as bad of shape i would actually like that one more anyway since it has the rear winshield wiper...i know it's stupid but i just like it. it would still need to be welded. i have access to a welder and equipment so i might get a piece of scrap metal and practice with a pro watching me. or i might just get them to do it for me.

 

Hiya I weld at work and on the side. I will tell you this. For what you put into getting your tools and scrapmetal (you have to learn on something) you will be deep in the hole for a small job.

Hatches can be had for cheap.

Welding on the other hand is a great skill to have and if you are interested in learning by all means please learn.

Welding isnt that hard really, just have some one teach you all the essentials. I learned how to TIG weld in a weekend, because some one that had alot of experience taught me

But then again, welding equipment is far from cheap, especially good welders. So if this is all you are going to use it for over the next 10-15 years, its probably not worth your investment.

 

i'm in the military and on base there's an auto skills hobby shop (like a 30 bay garage) and they have all types of equipment. i can rent the welder for 10 dollars an hour and have a professional watch me.

 

wow, for that kind of price w. a pro... just have him do it... then ask him to teach if you want

 

yeah the military has lots of benifits that civilians don't know about. their is a lot more stuff then what can fit in a 30 second commercial.
