Safe boost
Safe boost
I was reading on heavythrottle.com that an s13 sr's turbo is good to 15 psi then after that, it's past it's efficiency. I want to run about 13-14psi. Besides a boost controller and injectors, what else do i need to accomplish this safely? And what size injectors are good? 550cc? Thanks.
The S14 SR turbo (t28) maxes out at about 1.2 bar. You can't change injectors without some sort of engine management. Stock S14 injectors (380cc) max out at around 250hp. Might as well get 740cc ones while you're at it.
There are several engine management systems, basicly 2 categories:
- Piggyback (i.e E-manage blue, Apexi Safc)
- Standalone (PowerFC, E-manage ultimate, Autronic etc)
I'm running e-manage, 555cc injectors, stock turbo etc and made 280hp at the hubs. However, I'd recommend a full standalone system. I'm switching to PowerFC myself. I'm not familiar witht the S13 SR engine, but the S14 SR internals can take around 350 flywheel hp. But it all depends on how you use it, regular oil change etc etc. I've heard of people who have made 300hp at the wheels with the stock T28.. With uprated cams and headgasket, I suppose you could manage around 400 hp with an uprated turbo (ie GT2871r)
The positive about e-manage is that it can work "blindfolded". When your stock afm is maxed out, it will still work. PowerFC will need a bigger afm (Z32 or similar) to work when the stock one is maxed out.
My advice, assuming you'll be using the stock turbo for now (just admit - you'll get a bigger one later!)
- PowerFC
- Z32 AFM
- 740 injectors
- Electronic boost controller
- 3" exhaust all the way (don't forget the turbo elbow)
- Good airfilter (Apexi or K&N - The mushroom filters are crap)
Next stage:
- Bigger turbo
- Tubular manifold
- Uprated cams
- Headgasket
- Bigger throttlebody (I don't know the size for the S13 SR, but S14's have 50mm
)

well you only need full standalone if you are going bigger than 550 cc.. if you are not its a waste bro..
and to TS what you going to be using this car for.. i think people blindly chase HP and when the car is actually used for something the car is often tuned for the wrong thing..

I was only trying to give advice based on my own experience. I regret I got an E-manage and 550s... PowerFCs aren't that expensive. But very good point there. Tune the car right, instead of just chasing hp. And don't forget all the other stuff. Suspension, brakes, cooling.
I definetly appreciate all of the advice. Very very helpful. I am going to drive the car on a daily basis so I'm not trying to go past 300hp as of now. Though planning for the future is something to always keep in mind, until i get another daily grind, I want to get as close to 300 for as little money as possible. Eventually I will upgrade though. I would be content at 280 until I can raise more funds for upgrades.
As far as suspension and brakes, I'm trying to do that as well while attaining my 300hp goal which is why I am trying to pinch every penny. I am a maintenance first kind of guy so oil and everything gets changed on time. About boost controllers, as much as i would love an electronic controller, i'm looking toward a manual controller. I have a boost gauge so I can still keep an eye on psi. What are the pluses and minuses on MBC's?
And so far what I plan to do is:
FULL 3" exhaust
E-manage
550c injectors
Z32 MAF
Boost controller
Torby: maybe I can get your equipment when you switch over to the power FC? I would be so interested in doing that.

^^ man the thing about turbo is you will be up on 300whp before you know it lol... even though i wanna to be modest with boost. its very addictive lol and you do find your self wanting more like Torby said lol.

lol, I didn't even realize your location. I'll see how much I can get it for around here then i'll just get it where ever it's cheaper. Where can I get an e-manage mapped? Any performance related shop?
since your here the only spot to go to for 240 related anything is MidAtlantic Motor Sports
they don't work on my car, but i get all kinda of parts from them
