brake problem

-I had a wierd brake problem the other day. I was about 50 miles from my house and i went to stop and heard a disgusting grinding sound. I went to change my front brakes yesterday and the left side was fine. The pads had about 60% of their meat left. On the right side, however, the inside pad was fine, having about 50% of the pad left, but the outside pad was COMPLETELY gone. My brakes didn't even start to squeek yet because the pad that was completely gone didn't have a wear sensor on it. What would cause brakes to wear unevenly like this?
