Has anyone ever seen weld on or bolt on frame rails (also heard them called frame extenders) to connect the front and rear of the frame for an S13?

 

My friend Gerry is getting his oe frame rails removed and having reinforced ones intalled.

The car is a UNIBODY, its not like a muscle car where its a chassis on ladder frame.

Not something you wanna f u c k with unless you know what you are doing. Messing that up could kill you.

 

Yeah I would definately have a skilled Bodyman,etc do this.
It basically the vital point of the unibody structre.

 

hey , he's a difficult person to deal with at times so , the most i could get out of him was that his personal body man was gonna use steel as reinforcment , and box out the stock jack points as well with steel.

i was thinking of something that you weld to the front part of the frame and then run beside the existing part in the middle then weld it to the read. That would avoid tampering with any of the pre-existing frame and still strengthin ecerything else. Any input is greatly appreciated though because I have yet to talk to anybody who has done anything like this.

we're not a bunch of 16 year old ricer idiots from the F&F crowd that dont know **** about cars.

this will be a very well thought out job , and no way would the shop do something to a car that would indanger someones life.

So chassis flex is needed.

The frame rails are not that easy to remove, the rails are made up of multiple pieces to create one rail which is welded and connected to the rest of the chassis. What you can do is weld a "C" channel piece made out of steele on top of the existing frame rail with holes at certain points to weld onto the existing rail. That is a safe way to do it, there really is no quick way to take them out as I (and many others here) said, you would end up removing the whole floor pan with them. Along with the rocker panels, and other parts connecting the the A and B pillars. Its really complicated to expllain without pictures, but what your friend is doing is really unsafe. Adding to the part is ok so long as you do not "remove" those sections from the car.

Not hating, just want to help clarify the issue, working in the autobody field has taught me a lot. Not to mention having access to blown up pictures of the chassis part by part.

As mentioned before, I've worked in the autobody buisness for years and I know how shady the business can be. They talk the talk, but when the job is done, its done half-a$$ed and people get hurt. There are so many places I've known or heard reports about that never do the job the right way. For example, you you want your car back if someone decided to use paper metche to replace a metal panel or even a section of the frame's structure? It has been done and CHP has proof of what people will do to make a buck the cheapest way possible. 90% of the autobody industry is made up of people who only care about money and nothing about the customer's safety, hence the huge crackdowns and investigations here in NorCal in the recent years. Almost every single shop that was under the B.A.R.'s eye was shut down due to fraudulent practices.

Please be careful, I would advise your friend to keep an eye on the shop and make "unexpected" visits to see how the work is moving along.
