knuckle up (need help ASAP)

Ok im trying to get one of my rear knuckles off of the axle. The first just slid off with a little tapping from the hammer but the second on is being a PITA. Anyone know of a better way short of renting a gear puller to get the knuckle off?

Take a block of wood and place it at the end of the axle, and tap the wood. If you hit on the axle with a metal hammer, it will mushroom the head. Then, you won't be able to get the axle nut back on.....
