Rims with a 40 offset....

Hey, my S14 is the base model is only 4 lug not 5, and after a discussion with alot of people, the conclusion that was reached was that, if I get rims that are 17x7 (or 16x7) with a 40 offset, they will look sunken in and drop like 2" from the fender and potentially look worse if/when I drop the car. I'm not entirely convinced of this. I have found rims of lower offsets, although it it relatively hard to find (and expensive) in the 4 lug bolt pattern. Lower offset rims are much easier to find in 5 lug. Anyway, my question is... does anyone have pics of their 240's riding (dropped or stock height) on 17x7's or 16x7's with a 40 offset. Any pictures would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

yeah they look like ***. stock S14 5 lug rims are 16x6.5 and +40. i didn't like the look too well after getting 17x8 +30. much better look...but i could still go lower. front offset should be good around +20-25 and rear +15-20. and since it is a S14...8" or wider...well for looks go to like 9"+

I had 16x7 +38 before. Use some FF adapters, no shame in that.

I heard from many places that using spacers is bad because it puts too much stress on the lug nuts due to the weight of the wheel not being right up against the hub. Do you have experiance with using spacers?

Do you know any good places where I could get rims that have low offsets. (4 lug of course)

Also my car is pretty much a daily driver, so I don't really neeeeeeed like tires that are 245's.... 7" wide rims with 215's will suit me just fine. A nice offset is always nice though to give a good look.

I have spacers on mine still, had them since I bought the car(3 years ago). If a wheel should fly off or a stud breaks because of the spacers, club240.com will be the first to know about it. my word.

Edit: I'm not a hardcore Initial D1 Takumi Drift King so, It might take longer for wheels to start flying off.

Thats funny that you mention tires flying off. I have skyline brake conversion on mine. I have 4 lugs and the lugs are 60mm from nismo. these are only front wheels. i have 18" 5ziegen wheels. i am currently using two "1/4" inch spacers for each front wheel. a couple weeks ago i was driving and noticed the lug nuts getting loose and wobbling the tire. i pullled off the road and found that 2 studs opposite each other snapped somehow. probly cus the lug nuts were loose. anyhow i caught it in time before the rest broke off. anyhow last sunday, i was driving and was going about 30mph, i noticed it again, but on the other side (passenger side) this time, i started to pull over and felt the wheel wobbling, as i was pulling over, i heard POP!!! POP!!!, 2 studs snapped and before i could stop the car my whole wheel shoots out into the air. my car slams on the rotor and starts scraping. i couldnt control the car but luckily at that moment i only slid about 30-40 feet. i was only going 10mph. anyhow, i screwed my fender, bumper and sideskirts so now im replacing everything with s15. anyhow, can anyone tell me how this could have happened???? I dont wanna die!!!

ALso, what can i do to cheaply fix this death threat??? i took my car and showed it to a performance mechanic. i replaced all 8 studs with nismo 60mm, and changed the lug nuts, no i get about 20 turns onto the stud. i have the lugs at 95 pounds of torque. the guy checked it all out and said ill be cool and that i did fix the problem by buying new studs and the right kind of lug nuts. any suggestions?

Maybe get a front end allignment next time you take your wheels off. If you have S13 studs on your S14, I'm sure it'll do that. They won't even fit in the first place. not big enough diameter at the base. I never ran into those problems. *knock on wood*

You just answered in a nutshell why people like doing the 5 lug conversion for base model S14's and S13's. If +40 wheels looked good or fit right on a 240sx, don't you think there would be a lot of 240sx pictures of cars with +40's?

And if you're still "not convinced", do some research - you'll find that +40 offset is a FRONT WHEEL DRIVE offset. This question or variations of the "wheel offset" question has come up numerous times. For a 17x7 wheel on an S14 (which is kind of narrow to begin with), you'd want a really low offset. For example, for a 17x8 wheel (front) +25 would sit really nice and clear brake/suspension components. In the back, again the 17x7 wheel is too narrow - a 17x9 +35 would be a good match here.

IT IS VERY RARE TO FIND A 4 LUG WHEEL WITH THOSE OFFSETS unless you buy the high dollar, high brand wheel with custom made offsets, or - you guessed it - convert to 5 lug.

Now if after talking to many people, reading the comments in this thread, and reading my comments still doesn't convince you, then um... buy +40's and call it a day

But it'll still look funny

I've made some rough plans for my car and divided them into stages of mods. As part of stage one I've decided on a set of rims that are +38 offset, 16" and I've decided they are better than stock steelies with 1989 hubcaps. I'm going to roll on those until I progress to the point where I am ready to get a 5 lug conversion and some deep low offset rims. This is basically cuz I can't stand hubcaps and will do anything to get rid of them. I found a company that does import nice low offset 4 lugs from japan but they are very pricey.

FN01 RC's are nice and cheap. they have pretty generous offsets for a 4 lug also.

I'll look into those FN01's... I think I've seen them but the lowest offset I found was 35....

And agreed... old school wheels do not suit an S14...
