Question strut mounts

since i have had my kyb gr-2s and pro-kit installed on my s13 i have a clunking type noise when i hit small bumps or cracks in the road.
i figure the mounts are the culprit since i don't think those have been replaced in the 150,000 mile life of the vehicle.

when looking to order new mounts i see that everywhere i look only front mounts are available. how is this set up?
are they even struts in the rear, or are these shocks (i'm confused as to the difference between the two)... and if so what do i get to mount these?

also... kyb, other brands? or oem replacement?

any info is appreciated

oh damn. there's KYB REplacements! when i get back to my home comp, i don' have my favorite's list here at work.
the fronts i want to say are $50/ea, and the rear mounts are frikkin cheap, like $20 for both

ya i had this same problem when i changed to new springs.....i hope it doesn't happen when i put my koni's on...

Fronts are a strut assembly that uses upper mounts with a bearing in them (to allow the assembly to rotate when you turn), Rears are a regular shock setup with standard upper mounts that usually don't need replacing at all (unless you somehow break them) since there are no moving parts in them.

Clunking noise could be loose mounting bolts - sometimes they look tight and feel tight, but after 50 miles or so of driving, they'll settle in and loosen up a little. Same goes with the center nut on the shock shaft - if this is even slightly loose, you could get those noises easily.

BTW if you decide to go with an aftermarket pillowball-type mount, you'll feel and hear a lot more of the road's imperfections because the pillowball is a solid piece of metal, which will transmit road noise to the chassis, as opposed to stock mounts that have rubber bushings in them to absorb road noise

Thanks l2aine... i'll check the bolts. i don't think that would be the case since they made noise right from the beginning after they were installed, not after driving for a while, but it's worth a look.

Yeah, and as expected stiffer than stock... with the pillows you feel the bumps of course, but that's part of what makes them better for hard driving - they are stiffer than stockie rubber bushings, which means they stay put and keep your shocks/struts from flexing all around too

lol. everytime i hit a hard bump now i hear metal clanking.....i get kinda scurred.....i guess its normal. rite?
