this is my first 180, and i need bigger wheels, but is 18 too big?

 

I was going to buy 18's for my 240sx, but I got a deal on 17's. I'm glad I did because they are plenty big. 18's are cool for a show car, but they are heavier, more expensive, and require expensive tires. If I were you, I would go with 17's. Personally, I think 16's look nice on a 240sx. You should consider that too, because you can get a higher quality 16in wheel for the same price as a lower quality 17 wheel. If you wanted 18's, you shouldn't have any problems making them fit. You could probably fit 18x8's and definately 18x7.5's. Take care and good luck!

 

The wheels need to be large enough to allow clearance for your brakes. Anything larger sacrifices performance.

Since the stock 15's can clear the 300ZX brakes that's probably going to cover you. Unfortunately, the tires I want (Yokohama A509) are not available in sizes smaller than 16, so I will have to get larger wheels in the spring.

16" wheel is more than enough. Small sidewall offers upgraded performance, plenty PLENTY of tires available that are still cheap (215/45R16 Azenis for $88 each!), plenty of cool JDM wheels available that are relatively affordable.

17s are probably the biggest that I'd go on a non-turbo KA. you can totally run 17s, 18s, even 19s if you want on a turbo KA or SR, assuming you're making serious power. JDM drifter guys are mostly running big ol' 17s I think. 17s are mean. I want some 17x8 SE37K for my 240.

 

I had 18's they slow the car down, but if you want some show, they look good IMHO. I wish I could get a set of Advan Rims, Model 5 or Kreuzers. Those are hot and so are those Volk SE37a.

 

what does that have to do with anything, what does rims have to do with what engine you have.

 

It doesn't really matter what engine you have when your choosing rim diameters. What I think he meant was that, if you were running mad power, that you wouldn't notice the difference as much with heavier rims. The only reason you would go with a bigger rim with more power is because bigger rims tend to come in wider sizes. There are plenty of affordable, lightweight 17in wheels that you can buy. Kosei, Buddy Club, ect.

WHich do you think is gonna have an easier time spinning up 17s?

None of you guys are probably going to dish out $3000 on rims, so you and your sissy Koenig tantrums that weigh 50lbs each are gonna be slow as heck with your KA powered crapboxes running 17s.

think. i put some 17" axis wheelsite mesh on my car, it felt like I was driving a truck.

LOL, so what susp. do u (thoraxe) have in your ride?

 

I started out with kg/mm dr21 supersport springs and kyb agx. That ended up not working out -- the kg/mms werent stiff enough for how much they dropped the car (SLAMMED!) and the AGX didn't have enough compression damping to make up for it. Even with severely trimmed bumpstops I was basically slamming the bumpstops every time I hit anything, or if I turned I would roll over onto the bumpstop and get weird understeer.

Now i've got some random coilover that I picked up real cheap from the store next to ATS-BM. They work great. I dunno what the springrate is, but it feels like it could be 8k/6k, not sure. It might be less than that, but whatever. All I know is that it's MUCH stiffer sprung, but the damping is TOTALLY spot on and it feels REALLY good. It's softer going over harsh roads even though the springs might be 2-3x stiffer.

I've also got whiteline swaybars on right now, but I have to reinstall them. I'll be doing a writeup on why once I get it done (assuming it changes what I want to change)

And I've got 16x7.5 +22 Buddy Club P1s with 215/45/16 Falken Azenis... I've also got various random wheels/tires for drift that I throw out back.

I'm looking for some 17s only because I know I'm going SR soon, and the 225/45 Azenis in 17" are real tall, then I can raise my car a little bit and it'll still look very low cuz JESUS my car is low. My diff is like 2.5" off the ground, and my N1 dual is like almost touching the ground always haha

 

now those whiteline sway bars... what mm r they?? (front/rear)and those are adjustable too...
