Widest tire for 17x8 rims?

I've been looking to see if I can find any info to see what's the widest tire that'll work w/ 17x8 rims. I see wheel/tires packages with 205/45/17. Can I use anything wider? like 215? What's the widest I can get without the outer rim getting soft? thx!!!

The usual max for 205s is 7 inches. 215s would be ok on the 8 inch rim, but it'll be slightly streched I think, not sure. Someone correct me on this. But don't run 205s, that's a little too narrow.

The widest that you can 'safely' mount on an 17x8" rim would be a 245. That is what I run on my WRX with no problems.

205s fit well on 6.5" wheels...maybe even 6" wheels.
edub said it...245's is the widest I would go on a 8" wheel.

doesnt have to do with ur 17inch rim, but i fit a 225/50/15 on 7in wide advan rsrr.....sticks out a bit, not optimal for sidewall stiffness, but it works and grips much better than the 205's i had before! one thing is, it rubs my tein he's if i dont adjust the stock camber adjuster to like 0degrees or so. thus, maxing out my camber plates only gives like 1.5 or 2 degrees camber, and i need more, especialy with these soft (kumho 711)sidewalls.
