yeah i've been hearing things like that too from one of my friends. He did the sr20. He doesn't regret it but he paid 3200 and that includes shipping.
It is not just swap the engine in and your set to go. There is quite a bit more to it than that. In my friends case he had quite a bit of downtime as well. So allow for that.

Parts are not like usdm parts. They're more expensive and depenting what it is can be difficult to get your hands on. But he puts down plenty of power.

If price isn't a huge concern SR20 is a very good way to go.

from the research I've done, ka-t and sr20det seem to cost pretty much the same. If you're shooting for specific power amounts, sometimes the sr comes out over the kat, sometimes the kat is cheaper. My opinion on it is that it's just a matter of personal choice.
