ANyone turbo'd a KA24?

Anyone turbo'd the KA24? I want to know what I'm going to be needing exactly and what is involved, I'm assuming the same thing as any other NA-Turbo swap right?

no nothing like a swap. Buy a kit if you are unsure what goes on with a turbo but if you want to build one your self, besides being able to fabricate pipping here is what you will need.
Turbocharger/turbine
wastegate
inncooler
BOV
turbo exhaust manifold (probably have to be fabricated, i haven't found one yet)
vaccuum lines
EGR line blocker (you could weld it shut)
3" air filter
down pipe

and recommended to have if you are going to be running much over 6psi:
Oil Cooler kit
370cc or bigger injectors but some are top feed so you will need a new fuel rail
fuel regulator
fuel pump
2.5" or bigger catback and eliminate cat
forged pistons 8:5:1 or 9:5:1
probably more
Since I am only running 6psi I can do it on stock internals but i do have a 2.5" catback, 3 in K&N cone, 91 Cams but otherwise stock and have no problems running 6psi. I would like to recommend to anyone getting a Stage 2 Clutch and a Stage 2 Flywheel though. They are my next investment.

I have a turbo'd KA in my s13. The downpipe, i/c piping and exhaust manifold were all custom laid out. he KA's have awful fuel output stock so for turbo, you need to up the fuel. I have 370cc injectors, fuel regulator, pump and custom dual outlet top feed rail. I'm running a 2.5" downpipe,3" testpipe and 3.25" catback as well as a fmic and a 3" K&N filter thats down in the fenderwell (that was tricky..cold air for a turbo :) you'll also need a new ECU for all the mods. Talk to the guys at Jim Wolfe Tech. They're awsome. I'm running a slew of other stuff..check out my car in the Registry. If you have any questions..ask away.

You can safely run about 7-9psi on a stock fuel system but once you go above 7 I would recommend at least a new regulator. Make sure you keep an eye on your gauges though. Oh and you can run about 9-10psi on your stock ECU.

I'm shooting for about 240-50ish to the wheels. So guesstimating the tranny loss, drive shaft loss, etc. (at first I was thinking in MR2 terms and forgot about the extra loss...) I'd say I'd probably have to have about 300-310 to the flywheel. Am I right? I dunno, how much PSI would I be looking to push with a medium sized turbo?

The USDM chasis should be able to hold about 350 but if you go much over that you will need to look into having you chasis strengthened. I believe that is about right since I was told I would need to rebuild my chasis if I dropped a Chevy 350 in my 240

kade4me 06-22-2003 02:51 PM

how do you rebuild/strengthen the chassis? I'm around the 290-300flywheel hp on 7psi of boost.

Roll cage I'm assuming. I don't know, how many ponies am I going to be needing to get into the 12's assuming I have upgraded suspension?

Driftin RPS13 06-22-2003 11:54 PM

the motor internals can safly hold about 12psi, 15 if tuned by a very skilled tunner (so im told by people on otherforums with this KA-T's) the chasis does not need to be rebuilt/strengthed, thoes same people have said nothing about that, plus i no i guy who had a KA-t and now has an RB26DET and hasn't rebuilt/streingthend the chasis thats all i no so far, plus the parts list that was already given, o and instead of a new/reprogramed ECU u can get a S-AFC or something similar to that too, or if u got big bucks get the Power FC. there are many options but i do recomend upgrading the fuel system regardless :thumb:

is anyone here going to the k2k2k3? I'll be there and ill have my turbo'd KA with me. I'm thinking a little about a 13B swap into my car. Am i crazy? Lol.

ZainL 06-30-2003 05:27 PM

would it be safe if i were to bore my ka out to 2.6 and then turbo or what?

Driftin RPS13 06-30-2003 05:30 PM

would it even be worth it???? i mean 2.4 for a for-banger is pretty big already, i dont think id be worth it but i dont no

I'd go with no. The KA bore vrs stroke ratio is already unsquare..that why at 8000k, it'll break. Trust me, field exp. I think JUN makes a destroke kit for the KA to bring it down to a 2.2 so it revs higher and smoother. But hey, thats why I love my turbo KA..i've got gobs of torque. :thumb:

ZainL 07-01-2003 08:34 PM

so u guys are saying its not a good idea to bore it but make it displace less for a smoother more torquey (sp?) ride and so i can boost more safely?

here is some inspiration.

Local AZ S13 with T66 turbo KA just put down 504rwhp @ 31 psi.

Car already makes 350rwhp @ 4,500rpm. Average power from 6,000rpm to 7,200rpm redline, engine is making ~495rwhp
