Custom Turbo setup
Custom Turbo setup
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK this is what I plan to do this summer:
T3 Internal wastegate turbo (ebay)
Vortech FMU
1G dsm BOV
exhuast manifold from realnissan.com
Custom welded BOV flange on pipe from my uncle
eBay manual boost controller
using stock intake pipe as charge pipe
custom welded oil return to the oil pan off the turbo
undecided what to do with the downpipe?(suggestions)
Thats pretty much what a ghetto turbo kit composes of rite? I do not plan to run an intercooler untill a little after, I am going to run boost at 5 psi. Basically what I want is a streetable turbo on my car that spools up quik and that wont cost alot, Im planning on spending a lil over a grand for this setup. I have total confidence I can do this. Am I really missing any major things?seems like I have got everything covered, please say if I am or if there is something else I should use. I am going to put the BOV between the stock intake pipe and the manifold where the rubber thing goes. I know I am missing something but I just cant think of all of this when I am typing.I already have an Intake and exhaust (2.5") so that is covered.I also understand I will have to retard the timing a little bit, dont know how much that would also help.PLEASE help me out with ideas and what I should do.Also what Kind of smog preoblems would I run into, I have a smog connection but just in case

first off, if you are going with an intercooler, I would recommend doing it now, it will save you lots of money in the long run. intercooler piping is expensive to manufacture, and doing it more than once is a waste.
I did something similar to this setup for a little under a grand, just finished so no power numbers yet. and Im running 7psi on sohc.

i agree. do not run without an intercooler. don't forget that not only is it faster, but it is SAFER!!! unless you want to replace your motor with another ka you should use an intercooler. you can use a starion or conquest fmic. you can get sidemounts out of just about any turbo production car. i know that if you search you will find brand new spearco fmic for less than $400. not too much money and you might not blow your motor as fast.
ftrs13 what setup do you have pm me so we dont hijack this post but im interested if it cost you under a g, but I know for hondas (i know booooo) that is mostly what a home made turbo kit consist of so sounds like it would work, and yes you definantly might want some sort of intercooler great investment
Great to hear this. I'm also piecing together a junkyard (home made) turbo. I plan on doing it close to $500 though. I say definately go with an Intercooler. If you're like me, you're not going to ever really boost that much. For a setup like that, you can buy a saab/volvo intercooler. Those things will be more than enough for the setup and go for CHEAP (like $40 shipped) on ebay all the time.
I just bought my turbo (WRX turbo off '02) and shipped to my door for $90. The WRX turbo has some odd connectors but my friend happens to have the uppipe and downpipe so i can take parts off that so that saves me money. I'm going to piece my own manifold and downpipe.

oh by the way if you only plan on running 5 psi you won't need a boost controller. make sure you find out what the actuator on the turbo is set for. you will find it difficult to find one that will run anything less than 7 psi. if you still want one, i have them for sale for $30 with a warranty and if you don't like it you can return it for a refund.
