ka24et need help diagnosing problem asap!

Hey guys brand new dilemma proudly brought to you by KA24ET! Yes I have searched! well all jokes aside here’s whats happening. I’ll post my setup at the bottom. I was home for spring break last week and it drove fine prior to the incident. So my friend was driving my car, got curious and boost shot up to 15lbs. The car starts smoking (white smoke under the hood coming from the breather that sits on the valve cover, a lot of white smoke which usually means burning water/coolant), so he pulls over to try and check it out. After a while he tries to crank it, finally after about an hour it cranks and stays on but took a million tries. When the car is on, alot of white smoke comes out of the vent from the valve cover, and when he plugs the vent the smoke comes out of the exhaust. I want to say it’s the headgasket, but so far the mixture has not shown in the oil, doesn’t overheat, and for some reason the power is still there. The stock headgasket is good for about 400hp as well. Blown piston rings? Maybe but then you would prolly smell/see the oil level go down which it has, but still the power is there. He ran a compression test last night but didn’t do it while the car was warm so he got something like 60’s all across. Any suggestions please post…thanks for all your help.

It's impossible for smoke to come through the valve cover vents unless something is burning off in there because there is no intake or exhaust track.
The first thing i would do is drain the oil and check it for water or coolant. If there is traces of it, or if you cant tell check the radiator coolant, you may have busted head gasket and would need a new one. If that was the case though white smoke would shoot out the exhaust and not the top end. other things i would check is the valve seals and valve guides. Check the two and report back. Now that I think of it you may actually have two problems...a bad valve seal (but this would cause a loss of power) and a blown head gasket which would cause the white smoke.
The white smoke could come out the radiator if there was oil in it, so deffinatly check that, but other than that can't help ya unless i see it. Check into getting a mr. gaskets copper gasket set if it's the head gasket or not. You always need extra insurance. I'm very interested so report back when you find the problem. Hope this helps. But deffinatly do a tune up before you do anything major because it may be minor.

hey thanks for the reply. well here are the replies i got from other forums.

"Sounds like your block has a hole in it. You could have melted through a cylinder wall.

Steam out of the VC means your crank case is getting coolant in it, either you blow a coolant gallery, or you put a hole from your block to a coolant gallery. Either way id say its time to tear that beast apart."

unfortunately I've already had my friend do all that you suggested. First thing in my mind was that i thought it was the headgasket but now it seems like it may be something more serious. im not home to diagnose myself (im in NY...my friend blew the motor) but i'll keep you posted. chances are itll be time for a rebuild...

don't waiste your money rebuilding it when a full motor would cost under $200. If you want to be safe buy a new engine, line the block, balance the crank, balance the rods, new valves and new valve springs, and buy forged pistons. a set of quality gaskets would also be a excelent buy. This would cost well under $1000 and would have a kick *** motor.
