What will the price range be for a medium quality set up for everything??. Cd player, speakers, amp, subs. I don't need anything too crazy. Just a decent set up that can bump loud enough. Any input is appreciated!. btw I have a 91 240sx se.

medium quality - you're probably looking at about $400-500 for a decent setup with a single 8" sub. That's with entry level units from well-known and reliable manufacturers, like Pioneer etc. You can probably find a special at some audio shop for 2 10's and TVs (LOL) and all that but it's probably all no-name no-quality brands that will break in less than a year.

If you like your music, you might want to consider starting with a mid-range name brand head unit with the features you need (need, not want - bells and whistles like folding faces and moving graphics don't make the sound any better) and a set of mid-priced name brand speakers (say, $80-120 a pair). Then you'll have a decent system while you save up for a good amp and sub of your liking.

To figure out the features you'd want and to check out brands etc. try websites like www.crutchfield.com. They have lots of pictures, specs, fitments, etc. that you could learn from.

Just don't buy from them - their prices are a little higher than elsewhere, but if you need their extras then they're really good with service

Awesome man. Thx for the feedback

I was looking at some cd players at a local place and a basic one goes for about $150cdn so I'll probably go for that.

I'll probably get one pair of speakers, maybe infinity?. What size goes into a 240? are the front and back the same?.

I don't need an amp for this set up do I? The guy at the store said the cd players have amps built in.

So I only need an amp for a sub?.

Infinity makes some pretty nice speakers, but it depends what you want in the speakers? Sound quality or sound pressure level? Infinity's have been known to lack in the bass dept., but have good mids and highs.

Most head units have amps built in, but most of the time they are only deliver a small amount of power to the speakers. If you amp the speakers you will definitely notice an increase in sound quality. But, most people find the built-in amps to be adequate.

If you get an amp for the sub, make sure it has enough power to make the sub thump!

I like my bass for sure. Maybe infinity isn't the best bet for me lol. So 4 x 6 fits all in the 240 right?. Can I power a sub without an amp? would that just not be worth it?.

I believe it's 4x6 all around for your car (front and rear) If you "like your bass" then you definitely need a decent powered amp to drive the subwoofer. You can't power the sub without an amp - what would you attach it to?

As for built-in amps in the head units, the most common configuration is to run the front and rear main speakers with the built-in amp, then run the sub and sub amp seperately.

If you don't need to shake the whole neighborhood like a high schooler LOL, and you prefer quality bass, you might want to look at a self-powered subwoofer unit, i.e. Bazooka's, Infinity Basslinks, etc. There give you the amp, sub, and enclosure all in one. They won't shake the ground outside (what's the point of that anyways), but inside the car the bass will be quality.

I looked at a sony cdxf5000. I also looked at pioneer 4 x 6 speakers. I think that's what I'll go with for now until I can afford an ok amp and sub.

Pioneer speakers are decent, and prices are pretty good. I have low-end Pioneers all around in my car and they sound great for the price

Anything better than the Sony for the same price? I've seen a couple problems with Sony HUs, none from Pioneer, none from Clarion...

...speakers you picked should be fine

I've been through 3 Sony HU's and have had no problems. I like the Sony HU's a lot, my next one will be a sony..well..my next one will be a full on computer so I guess it wont be a sony...
now for their speakers/subs...hahahahaha..
I have a set of infinity 4x6 in the rear right now, I'm getting an amp for them to help them out a little, they put out some nice highs and mids, but the bass is nasty...it sounds like crap even with my 12" sub... the sub sounds great, but the crappy bass..ugh...so i'm getting an eq to take care of that hopefully or maybe the amp can cut out the lows for me.

I tell you what though, I really love my 12" sub, it's a nice mtx sub, you can get them for around $50-60 on ebay, only need 1 especially for a hatch, it's powered by a Bazooka 500w amp which I am extremely impressed with. I didn't think it would do the job but it does it's job very well. MTX is great in making low wattage subs that hit hard.

If you don't need to worry about warranty and stuff, which I never do, then get all your stuff off ebay.

Well thx for all the replies and info!. I have a bit more info about whats going on. I checked out another shop and the guy said they can fit 5 1/4 speakers in the front. He recommended some infinitys of that size for around $160cdn. They seemed pretty decent...and he showed me the difference between them and the 4 x 6's and it was a pretty big difference. Would it be smart of me to just buy a pair of the 5 1/4s and a cd player and thats it for now?. It seems like a pretty good idea to me cause I dont really need the back speakers.

I would suggest you use lowerer level pioneer, alpine, kenwood, eclipse not in that order. you can look on zeb.com and sounddomain for a radio and speakers and subs.
I would definitley get 5 1/4 at least for the front doors. You dont need speakers in the rear.
You can even buy a package deal sometimes radio amp speakers subs off zeb.com or sounddomain.com for a reasonable price.
Ebay usually sells Memphis PR's for a reasonable price. They dont require a lot of power and they bump nicely.
Although you want just to bump and you dont want to break the bank you want to do it as right as possible. IMHO

Hey man, no one said you had to by it all at once go for the head unit and front speakers first... then as budget allows you can go amp and sub, then maybe some inexpensive rear speakers to fill out the sound (IMO)
