in my jeep cherokee..i have 2 JL Audio W7 12's...and i have and extra W6 8 in my room...just sittin around...im trying to find a good box to put it in though...

oh yea...i have a sweet box .... my parents paid for it and my whole system b/c it was my dads but he gave it all to me...so im like really lucky...and ive out hit everyone that tried me...i not trying to brag though...but the only way to keep the cops off me a$$ is to keep the bass on...2 instead of seven...and i have to set my lows on -5 on the equalizer...

and it still kicks pretty damn hard...

 

get 2 10's type r's they are 1000 wats each better then 12's and it hits like you got 15's.

 

It doesn't seem that weight is a real concern for your car but if it is a daily, drift, drag vehicle your system can be custom made to have a quick exit from the rear for when you drag & drift. I have to say that 3/4 inch MDF wood for 2 12" speakers would play a major part of your weight during any type of racing and if your amp is mounted seperatly on the same material plus sound dampening it makes a real difference.

I would suggest if you like racing keep the system to a minimum.....

 

Well yes the Alpine Type-R's are a nice sub. but they do not handle 1000watts each. they only handle 300wrms each.
and they wont sound like 15's. if you want 10's that will play more like a set of 12's go for the Kicker L7. the 10" L7's have the cone area of your average 12. that means one 10 pushes the same amout of air that average 12. making it sound like a 12.

a question to the original poster. how can you say that 10's are better then 12's, yet hits like 15's? have you ever heard 15's in a car? dont run your mouth if you dont know what your talking about.

But he is right about the alpines consistent power it uses (RMS)infinity and kickers are good also when it comes to size and delivery. THe do not require large boxes and they perform well. Alpine and Infinity would require the least power to run them infinity Kappa perfect 12" uses 400 rms so you can get a smaller sized amp. The kicker uses 600 rms for the 10"L7 & 750 rms for the 12"L7. But only use the kicker 10" if you are concerned about space because for what ever reason the 12" requires at least 1.75 cubic feet for sealed and 2 cubic feet for ported.

 

guys, its all about the quality of the install, not quanity.

1 10 inch sub will do you just fine, if anything it'll prolly be too loud

back in the days of audio competition, I had 1 10 inch sub hitting 140dbs.

the average pair of 12 inch subs hit 132 dbs.

big bass for less than 50lbs can be had.

Remember:
go with a QUALITY 10, give i some QUALITY power, and put it in a QUALITY box, and u'll be set, even if you're a basshead like me

For the JL8W6 you have lying around, the recommendation by JL is a .375 cuft sealed box. Unless you want it ported. I liked it sealed and the ported box was just too big to make. The dimentions for the .375 sealed box are 16" X 9" X 8" (W x H x D). Click here for complete specs (PDF required).
