Alright here's my problem...On Saturday my dad and I replaced the clutch and transmission in my s13 with a brand new clutch and a much lower mileage 5 speed transmission. We bled the clutch and filled the tranny up with redline mt-90 gear oil so the tranny and clutch work great now and i'm in the process of breaking in the new clutch... only 450 miles to ago.

However, a new problem has emerged...when I'm driving the car in either 3rd or 4th gear and I let off the gas pedal when the rpm is in between 2000 and 2500 a semi-loud clanking/chuckling sound can be heard comming from either the differential or driveshaft vicinity.

I only hear this sound when the car is in 3rd or 4th gear and the moment the rpm drops below 2000 rpms the noise goes away. It also goes away the moment I give it the slightest bit of gas as well.

I thought the sound was due to me not torqing down the bolts that connect the driveshaft to the differential to spec, but today I unbolted them and torqed them to spec and still the sound remains...

So i'm hoping somebody has dealt with a problem like this before and can provide me with some helpful information or a helpful link... also if it would help I can try and record the sound and post it up.

 

you could of unbalanced the drive shaft.

 

Are there any definitive ways that I can check to see if I unbalanced the driveshaft without sending the shaft to a shop to be looked at?

And if it is the driveshaft is it possible to cause further damage to the driveshaft or any parts connected to it by driving it?

 

sounds like a bad bearing in the trans.... though i could be wrong... When you are in 4th gear the trans is in direct drive from engine thru trans to driveshaft..... this is the only time you will hear noise from the tailshaft (well one of them anyway) bearing when it is bad.... I will see if i can find my trans book to find the exact bearing later today....

 

If it was because of a bad bearing shouldn't the noise always be constant and not just occuring in 3rd and 4th between 2000 and 2500 rpms?

 

well teh rpm thign i cannot vouche for but if it is the bearing i am talkin about you will only hear it in 4th.... if you are hearing it in 3rd, then it may be someting else, but since you only changed the tranny i am betting on that bearing.... and i was not able to find my book last nite... still packed up from my move.
