LSD questions

i have a 96 se, 5 spd.

im looking at buying a vlsd from a 95 automatic. im wondering-

1. does it matter if it was from an automatic?

2. are lsd & vlsd interchangeable? do people just drop the v sometimes? or are they actually 2 different things, and is one preferable over the other?

3. i think ive gathered, from my research, that buying one from an s14 is the optimal choice, due to gear ratio & drive shaft configuration. is this correct? (i dont have any engine mods, so gear ratio should be proper, no?)

4. should i care much about mileage? i think this one has about 100k miles on it.

thank you!!!!

1. no
2. lsd is general reference - it can be viscous, clutch, or helical. "vlsd" specifically means "viscous limited slip diff"
3. s14 parts fit s14's.
4. not really just change the fluid because that's pretty much all you can do with a viscous.

thanks!

also thanks, but i also was asking which is typically preferable- could you tell me if you have an opinion on this? for different applications if need be? or for me personally(a little drifting but mostly roadracing)?

3. s14 parts fit s14's.
this is not one of your better attempts at being arrogant; you failed to answer the crux of the question. i asked what is best, not whether a square fits in a square-shaped hole. if you are going to be arrogant, it should be accompanied by good perception & thoroughness, lest you be made to look like the one being talked down to.

thats good news (i think?). thanks!

3. go with one from an s14 is your best bet. The gear ratios on an s14 are the same as an s13 which is the same as a non turbo 300zx which is the same as a infinity j30. they are all the same vlsd like 95% sure and will work with little to no mods. i need to change out mine cause i have an open diff and thats what i pretty much gathered.
but why not get the one intended for your model if you can.. its a no brainer
CHANGE THE FLUID!!!

a j30 fits in a s13 or s14... you just hace to change the diff covers. J30, 300zx, and Skyline's are all lsd's that will work in a 240. From what i heard differentials from aftermarket companies (clutch type?) are a little ruff, the vlsd is very smooth

If your doing mostly road racing and a little drifting the s14 VLSD sounds good for you, if you want to go with a different unit you could go with a 1.5 LSD made by an aftermarket company, that will also be helpful for road racing and occasional drifting.

I myself am more into the grip side of things and personally will be going with a helical LSD, dunno which one I'm using yet though.

and like they said, don't forget to change the fluid

If you had researched it enough as you claimed in your original post, you should have had your answer already. "S14 parts fit S14s" was supposed to be perceived as "yes", but apparently I under-estimated your intelligence twice: once by assuming that "S14 parts for S14's" was an obvious answer, and second - by assuming that you'd realize that there is no definite answer to "what is best" because of many variables including budget, driving style, availability, and last but certainly not least: driving skill.

BTW don't be ignorant. You don't know me so don't assume you know how I am when I am ignorant. I've been around this forum long enough to hear/read certain questions asked over and over with the same answers given over and over - and the whole thing could have been avoided if only the person asking the question put a little more effort in finding answers themselves instead of questioning someones "arrogance".

BTW good to see you put a real picture of what you were selling in the "For Sale" section instead of using the picture of my car that you took from my CarDomain page.
