rear end ?

hey, wats up all? i am hoping that i can get a quick response to this question because i am very intrested in buying a '89 240sx. i checked it out last week and every thing seemed fine. while i was driving it i passed by my brother who was spectating and he noticed a sound coming from the rear end. the car has 113000 miles on it and the seller wants 2300 obo. the body is straight, its a 5 speed and completely stock. i am thinking that the noise is a bad bearing but i could be wrong. could it be the rear end? if so how much would that cost to replace and if it is the bearings how much would that run me. im have a decent understanding about mechanics but i think i would have to take it to a shop to have that repaired. if so should i buy performance parts to replace the old ones? i want to buy this car so i am hoping that someone can guide me in the right direction. any input would be awesome. thankss all...

care to describe the sound, was it during motion? while braking? cornering? could be anything at this point from diff chatter to worn subframe bushings

if its something in the rear differential, you can get another one for under $300... i just got a whole infiniti j30 subframe with differential, axles, rotors, calipers, everything. for 325 from the junkyard. the reason we chose a j30 differential is because its got limited slip differential and the biggest reason, is because a j30 is an automatic, old person car. in other words, you know the differential hasnt been beat to death like it would be if it were from a 240 or a 300zx...
