Well, I hate emissions first off. My friend has an SR in his 240 and it passes like a charm with no cat. What he did was put real high octane gas into the car like 93 or what you can find, and drive it hard on the freeway to the e-check place. The motor is nice and warm and passes cleanly. But, they dont do any under hood or under car inspection, only gas cap and sniffer.

Sometimes the smog person lets your car cool down...and just keeps you waiting.

That too or they try to wreck the 240 by putting the front wheels on the rollers. Happened twice to me and once to all my other buddies with 240s. My friend Kyle had $300 worth of damage done to his. Just watch out for those morons who think the 240 is front drive

It hurts the car when they put front wheels on the rollers, hit the gas and it takes off and hits that fan in the front. Smashed the front bumper up pretty nice. People who do echeck are dumb

Sigh. It's been asked a million times. I live in California which is the strictest of all states. Some states don't test emissions, and night7 probably lives/lived in one of those states. Some states allow "dirtier" exhausts than others. Some states test differently. Some states require visual inspections, some don't. Some states have test-only centers, some don't.

In California, anything other than an engine at least as old as the one that came in the car at the time it was sold, is illegal unless you have it approved by CARB, which isn't a hard process. You just make sure the engine is the same year or newer than your car, that all the smog equipment it came with is there, and that passes their sniffer. Then they give you a sticker that says everything is kosher, so the smog guys know what's up.

Anyway, that means an SR20 in California is illegal. People do a lot of things to get around emissions. Some people have friends who'll disregard visual (if it passes sniffer) for a few extra bones. Other people are shadier.

You might want to ask someone who lives in your state. Where do you live?

I currently live in chicago.
Ok here we go guys...
1. Back in june or july of last year i went to hot import nights. this guy had a 95 240 with an sr20, he said that he lives here in chi-town but he registers his car in wisconsin. So wisconsin is one of those lucky states that doesnt do emissions. I think indiana too(not too sure).
2. Someone told me that to pass emissions i should pour octane booster in, then the highest gas available (93 i think) drive around for a bit then go test.
3. Someone else told me to change the catylic convertor and then step #2.
4. A guy from a used car dealership is selling a 240 with an sr20, and said that it will pass emissions, that it is illegal, and that i should not trust anything this forum says because u guys are wrong??(i didnt believe him too much cuz i think he was juss trying to get rid of the car)
Has anyone here pass emissions with there sr20?? Has anyone here failed??

I can pass any car I want in CA for about $250.

Just need to know whre to look. I'm sure the used car dealership does that. There's used car dealerships that sell S15s and EVOs from Japan. That's pretty damn shady, so wake up, and think about it.

I have the same problem, I live in CHicago area too. I am in a process of getting a CLEAN 240 for a swap. I contacted Kwai Garage in Arlington Heights IL, they do sr20 swaps, and they told me that you can pass, with a cat, turn down the boost to stock levels and lean the car out a bit. Again that is just what they have told me so please don't flame me if I am wrong.
