Newbie who wants to swap engine in 95 240sx

Hello there everyone. I've been reading many posts here. There are some very experienced and knowledgeble people here, Good. Here's the thing. I got a 1995 Nissan 240sx w/ only 50,000 miles (64500now) w/ the stock motor. I like it ok, but I was thinking of swaping the motor for either a SR20DET or a RB20DET. I don't know all that much about cars. I drive it to work, race it some and I floor it on the freeways. I want a faster car w/ more HP and torque. I would have to get the engine, and have someone completely (100%) install it for me including all parts etc.. since I wouldn't be able to do it myself. I am fraid of reliabiliy problems though. I'm afraid that I will messup my car by swaping the engine if not done right. How is the maintenance? Is it difficult to maintain a sr20set or rb20det? What about replacing parts(distributor, starter, etc..) if anything goes bad? If anyone can elighten me I would really appreciate it!

Of course there is a risk of swapping engines, you dont know how well or bad the last person that owned it treated it. If you go RB20, i suggest going down to mckinney and have them install it. It will be worth it, they are very experienced with skyline engines and not to far from LA. The maintenance is like any other engine, nothing overly special that i can think of right now. There are quite a few places that have oem parts, srswap.com phase2motortrend.com mckinneymotorsports.com just to name a few. Hope that helped you out, and keep us posted on what route u choose to go

Thx for the info HyJynx! I have been reading about the differences between the SR20det and the RB20DET. I would go with the RB20DET. It seems to have the most potential and performance. You pay more for the SR and get less. hehe. Anyone know a website where I can get an RB20DET for a good price? I should get a Front CLip right? I heard that with front clips you rarely need to get or modify any additional parts. I wonder how much installation will cost. The RB20s are less than 2000 I belive? Thx again!

Honda is like the most retarded company when it comes to performance in their cars. The only Honda products I would buy would be their bikes. Their best engine for the cars is the B18C5 and that isn't even much to talk about. It only has around 210hp and 185lb. of torque. It is basically like buying the a Mitsubishi 4g63. I have looked at the prices and the 4g63 can be bought for less than $2k, and Honda's V-tech is around $5k. It is such a waste of time and money if you want a fast honda. This is why I chose the Nissan 240sx, because of the fact that you can swap out the engine for the all mighty skyline engines. And they make some badass drifters!!!

You forgot about the S2000 motor? And for a 1.8 that pumps out 200 horse N/A, I don't see how that is weak. Honda don't make bad cars/motor, they just happens to be wrong wheel drive (with a couple great exceptions).

That is still pretty weak considering that the honda F20 engine 240hp is with a paxton supercharger.

you have got to be a dumb**** b18c5 is a weak *** motor not really even worth mentioning same with a gsr. hondas strongest and imo best motor is the h22! ever ran against a jdm h22a in civic pushing 5 lbs of boost with lsd? however 4g63 is not a weak *** motor and puts out plenty of power and jdm cyclone motor can be had with about 1000-1500 out of pocket with motor ecu wiring trans and mounts. the 4g63 is a very strong motor with alot of potential.

It is still a Honda engine. I do know a lot on the 4g63 from the evo's. They are mean as hell engines, that is why they have been still around for over 12 years, and Mitsubishi puts that engine in almost all of their cars. The cyclone is the older engine from the early 90's and is found in a lot of 1g eclipses, plymoth lasers, and the eagle talons. Before I started looking at nissan's, I had plans for making a project eclipse with all sorts of performance products. Now I was drawn torward nissan, because of the well balanced s13-s15's cars and the all mighty rb engines from skyline.

they are mistu engines and they are the strongest engines that they made since you look some stuff up you will see that everyone with a 2nd gen always swaps to that engine

As far as this great honda motor with 240hp...it puts about 200 to the wheels and the peak hp is at about 8500RPMS when rev limiter is 9k (pretty sad)...it also has about 130-140 pounds of tq which is less than a stock KADE....also pretty sad.

Mitsu engines are ****...everyone knows that. Sure, they can make power, sure they have crankwalk and this problem and that problem blah blah blah, but they'll never be able to compete with any high end Nissan or Toyota motors...of which don't blow up all the friggen time.
