Question SOHC Tach Problems

Okay, I've done the search. Just to confirm. Options to get the tach in my SR20DET swap into a US 1989 s13 chassis.

1) Get an external aftermarket Tach
2) Get a JDM cluster
3) Get a USDM DOHC 91-94 cluster.

Question on option 2 and 3. I had someone tell me that the JDM cluster needs to have pins redone to get it to work properly. The USDM DOHC... is that a plug and play? Or is there more I need to do?

Thanks in advance.

I just swapped my '90's speedo into my '93 180SX jdm cluster and put that in no problems. Only kouki ('96-'98) 180SX clusters need wiring to work and their tachs don't swap into us or earlier jdm cluster with out custom work either.
