Turbo Backfires

I've heard many different theories why turbos backfire, but I'm not sure which one is correct. Does anyone know for sure why they backfire? It's driving me nuts not knowing.

any of the prototypes I have worked on did it due to going rich between shifts due to running a vet to atmosphere BOV and a safe tune..ie low power (hey...you blow up a prototype and see what they do to ya)....
