300ZX or 240SX

Ok, so I've been having a hard time deciding between a 300ZX or 240SX. I gonna buy one of these cars and turn it into a drag/track car but I can't figure which one I want. If I were to get a S14 I'd put a RB26DETT in it or a 2JZ, build it, stroke it and single turbo. If I were to get a Z32 I'd build the motor, stroke it, and do a single turbo. The problem with the S14 is with a swap it throws the weight distibution off pretty badly and then taking corners sucks. I'm looking for a power goal of at least 600whp but 800whp is more ideal. I'm doing all the work myself as I have a garage with a lift and all the tools I need. Some one help me out here.

No, the distribution is not great enough to make a big difference. Of course, ppl could argue the fact till the end of time... but IIRC, 240s are a bit heavier in the tail than the nose. 300zx are a lot heavier than 240s. Get an s13 coupe, no power options... light, stiff, and sexy. S14's are IIRC 180lbs heavier than s13s...

You're in the wrong place to ask for an unbiased opinion on that one, but keep in mind that with 800 wheel taking corners will suck in either of those cars.

Edit: Sorry to confuse; I was replying to the initial poster and meant 'People in a 240 forum are obviously going to tell you to get a 240. The S14's weight balance is a non-issue in the case of 800whp; neither of the cars you mentioned will corner well with that much power.'

i'd go with an s13 and the 2Jz the 300 would be too heavy.

I love the 300zx TT... but i would never work on it, or try to pay to maintain it. I got to drive one once... It was like a religious experience.

a 240sx is a good car for a do it yourself-er
a 300zx is a good car if you like fixing it more than you drive it

how much of a pain in the *** would it be to put a 2jz into a car. what tranny would u use? seems like the motors are a lot cheaper than an rb25 or sr would be to buy. im talking just the motor tho.

good luck. IMO i think the 240 handles better then the 300zx only because i've had expirience with both cars. 600-800 is a little overkil for a track car dont you think? I dont think it'll be possible to build a 50/50 track drag car. Well it is, i just wouldnt do it. GoodLuck. S13 2JZ FTW

I would think you would want more weight in the back for drag? IDK.

Having owned/driven both cars for more than a year, i'd like to put some input on this subject, basically just my experiences and opinions on them both. Handling wise, yes, the 240 is lighter, but that's not the only thing considered when talking about handling. The Z32 is heavier with a wider wheelbase, along with SuperHicas, which keeps your *** on the ground in some sticky situations. The 240 seems a bit sloppier than the Z, it has alot of body roll, and the car just seems to enjoy oversteer. The 240 is a small, nimble, peppy car. Adding insane amounts of horsepower to a car that was designed to have 220 hp (S14 w/SR, just for an example) will result in a lot more work than planned being done. The Z32 was designed to be a performance car. The car itself can handle anything you throw at it. I put down 320bhp in my s13, but I also snapped an axle, a driveshaft, and some motor mounts. My Z32 is putting down 384bhp and the car is still as stable as the day I bought it. Yes, the Z is a real pain in the *** to work on ($85 for spark plugs and 2 hours of work anyone?) and parts are really expensive, but if you have the money, go for it. It's an expensive car upkeep wise. The 240 is easy to work on, and parts are cheap and common (even for the SR). Reliability isn't an issue with either car, my S13 was my daily for a year, just as my Z32 has been. Just keep up on them and your fine. My 120k mile VG pulls as hard as it came from the factory, and I dont plan on blowing that motor anytime soon. The SR is a workhorse, and you can beat the crap out of it. All in all though, if you have the money i'd opt for the Z32. To me it just seems as if the Z was more thought out by Nissan, not much of it was overlooked. It's a better overall car, with alot of potential and a better car from the factory. The 240 has an awesome aftermarket, and it is a cheaper car in almost every aspect. But I just dont see it as a better car than the Z.

my pops has a 90 tt 300zx and so does my neighbor. and they just dont seem to be worth the truble. it takes like forever just to change the oil or spark plugs. ive seen like 600whp 300zx's and they arent as fast in the 1/4 mile as a 600whp 240. so it whatever you want but id go with the 240.
