Another buying a 240 thread (need more info)

here's the deal. I realised I work on my car alot and want a dialy driver. I was going with a civic or something but them I realised I can get a 240 fairly cheap also(like 2-3k)

I know I want to start a 240 project after I get bored of the GST I have now. So why not get the 240 now an slowly mod it then make the GST the daily since the 240 probably has more potencial.

-other than basics stuff you look for when buying a car, is there a downside that I should know about these cars.(trannies, rear end, ect)
-I was looking for like a 91-94 hatch about how much do those weight

can toss any other useful here too, thanx

oh, here's my eclipse so far http://www.cardomain.com/id/mywhirl2

'94s were convertable auto only
240s have timing chain problems, you will probly need to change it around 100K miles (~$200 if you do it yourself)
thats the only problem i can think of right now

What are some of the early signs that you need a new timing chain?

No, he works on his car A LOT. It's a DSM, that's typical.

the stock nissan design wears early. you should probly replace it with the new design at around 100K.
you will hear a rattling noise coming from under the timing cover (behind the fan) when your timing chain starts to go.
its actually the plastic chain guides that wear. the chain itself will never break, but if the guides wear, and the chain gets loose, and skips a tooth or two, you will lose power, gas mileage, etc. if the cam timing gets too far off, pistons hit valves. (thats not good)

timing chain tensioner
and the brakes like to stick. i've had to rebuild my rear calipers and free-up the fronts.
i'd advise anyone buying a used S13 in the northern U.S to get a $7(per axle) caliper rebuild kit and replace all the seals and what-not.
