Is this a bad clutch?

When I accelerate in 1st and 2nd gear my car lurches and has a very jerky acceleration. Is this most likely a worn clutch?

Possibly, or a timing chain showing stretch. Could also be a pressure plate/throwout bearing issue.

well if it was completely bad, it would do it in every gear. need more info..........

are u slipping at all?

that sounds crazy.

a bad TO bearing would squeek its *** off and then expload like mine did when i installed the wrong ( old dried out spare) TO bearing during a clutch setup a while back

and like LA said a bad pressure plate would not hold its clamping force

Yeah, there is a little slippage there. Theres no squeaking or anything but its almost like how it felt to drive when I first learned to drive a manual, all jerky, i can feel my head bobbing back and forth. The best way I can explain it is that under acceleration the car accelerates in "spurts." You mentioned the timing chain, mine does rattle. I suppose i'll look at the clutch first then if that doesnt fix it ill look into the timing chain.

Might be the 02 sensor or the MAF sensor. If those are bad, the engine might act like that. FYI I've owned 3 240s and I've never had a timing belt problem (knock on wood).

Ive had pressure plate experiences.... My acura legend gave me a big *** raping with one. I learned not to hold the clutch in at lights because of that. My pressure plate BLEW UP. It was odd. It would slip like **** sometimes, and sometims it would be grabby and chatter on takeoff. Its weird having a bad pressure plate.

i think it's more likely that your maf is to blame. you say it runs in "squrts", in nuetral will it want to die at like 2500rpm or so.

Well my car must have heard me talking about it because its not doing it anymore. I put it in 3rd and tried to take off and the car died immediately- so I dont think its the clutch, unless its sporadic. Maybe I'll run codes.
Also, in neutral I can rev it to redline all day long and it runs like a champ. I think its some kind of transmission issue, maybe I need to change the gear oil. Too bad my plug is stripped to hell.

BWAHAHAHA... you never got a replacement for it like I suggested did you? tisk tisk.

I dont think gear oil is the problem though.

i doubt it's your gear oil, clutch or anything related to the tranny.

what i'd do i reset the ecu, check to see that all sensors/wires/relays/fuse/coil/plugs/plug wires/dist. rotor… and just about anything electrical is good and secure.

second, clean the maf replace the 02 sensor clean the injectors.

if you know where/how to read the codes do that first. i don't bother on my car because i've never bothered figuring out where to hook up the code reader.

if you know how this could save you the time and money of having to do some of the things i mentioned.

Yeah, I ran codes on my Z at least 10 times, but I didnt use a code reader, I just ran them straight on the ECU. Hey phantom, were you talking about the replacement oil plug or the timing chain? If you were talking about the plug, Im waiting till spring. I have to tap it out and im not about to do that in 30 degree weather. But, like I said, it quit doing it. I guess we'll see.
