buying help
Hi,I am in the market for an s13 240 fastback.I live in southern california and have been looking on craigslist, autotrader, and cars.com,for ads.I have about $5600 to spend. What should i be looking to spend for a good condition 240.Also an sr20 would make the deal better.I am having a hard time finding what i am looking for, are there any other websites? Thanks for the help.
take your time man...and be efficient, you dont have to spend your money rite away...the cheaper you get the car for the more money you can spend on aftermarket parts, to replace the parts your going to need to change on even the most meticulously cared for car. these cars are 16 years old after all. good luck on your search and just in case you didnt know anything but a KA24 is illegal in california.
yeah i know they are illegal but how does the insurance company or police find out about them?I mean i have never heard of police searching for swapped motors?also,Is the 240 still a relatively fun car even with out an sr20?thanks for the help.
its still a great car with the KA24 i would at least go for a twin cam version as the E is pretty out dated...as for the police and government finding out about the Sr20, well you have to smog it...which can be a hassle. but otherwise i just wouldnt risk getting my car impounded because the KA has a lot of potential, it just needs a little work.
the 89 and 90 had the ka24e which is the single overhead cam version, and the 91-93 had the ka24de which is a dual overhead cam set up. the DOHC has more potential then the SOHC. And as for what mods you should do, some of it depends on what you wanna do. If you plan on like drifting, circuit type racing, things like that, coilovers would be a good first, so would new wheels and tires (wider, better tires), then work on HP, like with a cat-back, intake (even though it really doesn't make a huge difference), things like that. Thats just my opinion though!
Do more research dude, there's a lot of info here and on the Internet already answering every question you've asked so far.
As for the "how do cops know" thing - if you're in a targeted area they have been trained to look for and identify illegal swaps done to popular cars. Certain areas equip the police with picturebooks so they can identify if your car has the engine it came with or not. And if you get caught, because of the drifting trend, it's not a ticket anymore. They'll just take your car.
As for parts upgrades, it all depends on if you're in it to look "the part", if you want the good parts even if you don't really need them, or if you know what you're doing and where you're driving.
