Dead from 3500-5500 rpm?

So I just bought my first 240, it's a 91 se. I'm coming over from owning First an Rx-7 and Celica Alltracs, which i've had until last week when I got this. It's in great shape, and even came with some nice sideskirts and a front lip (I think from what i've been reading they're the OEM Canadian ones that were an option. They kinda look like the type x skirts)

Being that this is my first one, I can't tell if they always do this and need some advice; Engine pulls strong below about 3500-4000 RPM, but then it dies off really fast, hardly pulls at all until about 5500rpm there is a huge surge of power that lasts until 6500. My thinking is either that's just the way they feel, or i'm actually loosing power mid powerband.

I've been searching for a stock baseline Dyno from a DE to compare it, just to observe the powerband and see if it matches up, but I haven't been able to find them via seraches. I though this was odd because I the scuttlebutt seems to be that the ka is really crappy at high rpm. I did find one other post on a different 240 forum with someone else having a similar problem.

The only things I can think of that might be related is the previous owner had it taken to emissions a few weeks ago, and it had failed running rich but then he took it to a dealer and they changed (his words not mine) "a chip or something computer related" that was faulty. My thinking is igniter chip? Are these cars known to have bad circuitry in the ECUs like DSMs do?
