Differences...

Hey guys, I was wondering if you could be so good as to clarify a few myths for me?

1) Coupe vs Fastback: What's the difference in the looks? I haven't seen it.

2) HICAS: Do I need it? I'm looking to drift; so the LSD would greatly help, but it seems 4 wheel steering wouldn't help much.

3) HICAS: Is it only 4 wheel steering or any other stuff associated with it?

4) Year: 91 seems to be the best. Thoughts?

5) SE vs LE: What's the difference? I want one that's fully loaded... what model do I need?

6) EH: I'm Canadian, is there any options/differences I need to watch out for?

Thank you so much guys.

do a search on google images

if you get HICAS, you can always pull the fuse. its worth it for the LSD if you just want to drift, but if you're into autoX or road courses, HICAS 240s handle amazing. problem is is they are very rare.

3) HICAS: Is it only 4 wheel steering or any other stuff associated with it?

ABS, LSD, factory sport suspension

4) Year: 91 seems to be the best. Thoughts?

i've heard that the '91s have higher lift cams than the others, but i'm not positive about that

5) SE vs LE: What's the difference? I want one that's fully loaded... what model do I need?

LE is luxury edition= leather seats. the SE has power everything with cloth seats

6) EH: I'm Canadian, is there any options/differences I need to watch out for?

all canadian 240s came stock with an LSD, regardless of HICAS

I must ask are you buying a 240 just as a drift car becasue of what you saw in a magazine? If so you need to eduacte your self on the cost of drifting.. and it cost alot to do on a regular basis. DO you have the money just laying around to rebuild your whole suspention if needed becasue it will happen.. what about front end damage? That happenes alot. drifting isnt easy to do either...

just some food for though

I appreciate the input.

I am going to be drifting in a wide open area, and only recreationally; so I should be fine.

Regarding the Canadian LSD... does this mean that I can find a 91 SE Fastback without HICAS and still have an LSD guaranteed... since I'm in Canada?

you should double check that it has an LSD we can not say for sure but most cars in Canada do have the LSD, the best way to check,

With transmission in neutral, spin one wheel by hand and the other spins the same direction. Both spin very freely.

With transmission in gear (driveshaft fixed), the wheel is much more difficult to spin, plus the other wheel rotates in the OPPOSITE direction.

With one wheel fixed (someone holding it in this case, could also be on the ground), either in neutral or in gear, it is very difficult to turn the other side at all, but it will turn given enough force.

I've heard that other VLSDs and other types of LSDs tend to react to this test differently. For instance, the Torsen and other similar helical limited slip differentials act just like an open differential when subjected to this test. However, the above is how Nissan's R200V VLSD reacts to the test. I'd assume that the Z32's R230V would react the same since it's of similar design, just a bigger ring gear.

Is there any way I can check without jacking it up?

Shouldn't an LSD be a large round "mass" between the rear wheels?
