Hicas and exhaust...

Can some one explain to me what HICAS does or is.
I'm looking at a 240sx and I migh be buying it tomarrow and it has a HICAS feature.

Also, If I get an Apexi exhaust for this car, will it still be good to use when I get the SR20 next year? It says the pipe size is 75 to 85mm and thast like 3 to 3.5" so I think that would be good a for a turbo, but bad for my KA untill i get the sr..
its the single outlet one for like 400 something on nopi....

so what are your thoughts... thanks for anyhelp and hopefully tomarrow ill be the proud new owenr of a nissan 240sx... the thing needs body work, but other then that its solid

HICAS is basically 4 wheel steering, in hard turns it kicks in and helps u gain control with 4 wheel steering. For drifting it isnt go0d, but u can always get rid of the HICAS. And the apexi exahust should still be go0d for ur SR20, thats wut people usually use.

Yeh it might not be worth it right now, most of my races don't last much longer then the distance between two stoplights so high end might not be good for me, once I get an SR then it will be worth it.

Super HICAS

Your car really has Super HICAS.
It replaces HICAS and HICAS II.
They are all 4WS stability setups.

When your car is going slow, nothing happens.
(Disclaimer: going from memory, lost the link ATM, wouldn't be surprised if I mixed up in-phase and out-of-phase :-)

When it is going faster it uses in-phase rear-wheel steering when you enter the turn and then out-of-phase at the end of the turn.

When you are going super-fast it will just steer at the beginning (?) of the turn.

I know I missed alot of details and probablly injected some wrong info, but that is about the just of it.

P.S. Anyone know where I can get suspension components (shocks) for a S13 with HICAS?

As is evident with my last post, I was on crack--not literally, but close enough. Hopefully this will clear things up alittle.

From http://www.datsuns.com/Tech/carterms4.htm

Nissan's current version of 4WS is called HICAS, which stands for HI Capacity Actively controlled Suspension. There are 3 versions of HICAS in various stages of development, all of which are stability type systems only. A. HICAS -- Stability type system applied to the rear wheels. In production on the Nissan Skyline Coupe in Japan since 1985. B. HICAS II -- Same as HICAS except with "phase delay;" note: also includes opposite phase steering at high speed built into the system logic which delays turning the rear wheels to improve vehicle turn-in. This "phase delay" also includes opposite phase steering at high speed. C. Super HICAS--same as HICASII except front wheels also have some elements of active control.

And from http://www.ukcar.com/features/tech/traction/hicas.htm

...When attacking a corner, the rear wheels will steer in reverse first in order to sharpen the initial steering response. Then, when sensors sense that the car responds to steering, the rear wheels will steer in the same direction as the front wheels, thus immediately introduces rear-tyre slip which help adjusting the attacking angle...

(Can I avoid the flame now? Please?)

Hey New member w/ Hicus,

If you say the Hicus light turn on, you're in trouble that mean something is wrong. You'll have to run different test w/ the ECU or some steering test to see what's wrong w/ it. The light should only come on if you didn't start your car and check engine light suppost to come on w/ it. Once car is started it should turn off. I have a Hicus car myself, but I gotta tell you. I don't really like it. Since you want to do a SR20, I was told you'll need to either get a sr w/ hicus or change out the sub frame of the car to get rid of it. I wasn't sure if you can just get the hicus disable bar and still install sr. If someone can let us know that woudl be great. Welcome again, like myself, I'm a newbie in the forum.

Let me know your updates.
