Looking at 1990 240SX tommorow
So I will be looking at it tommorow. Hes asking $1,000 for it. How much should I talk him down. Heres a brief description: 1990 Nissan 240sx hatchback, 5 spd, Se rims with Z rated tires (I have all 4), JVC headunit with MP3, it has 208,000 miles, a small hit right back quaterpanel (cosmetic only) and few dents, the car runs fine and COLD A/C, great interior, no cracks on dash, I'm leaving the country so I need to sell fast! Willing to work on the price...give me a call for more details. I have had the car for only 5 months, I havent smogged it yet, but I have last years smogg and passed with flying colors. I wouldnt want to give up the car, but I'm in the military and I have to leave very soon. I just lowered the price today because of my situation. need to sell by tomorrow, Sunday, or Monday... Does
What should I be looking for? Anything I should know before looking at it? Should I be concerned of the mileage? From the description do you guys think the deal is good? What's the average price you guys pay for insurance? Thanks for your time. Sorry for all the questions. I just need answers before I buy a money pit. What are the specs of it? How do I know if it has LSD or what model it is? I'm not new to cars, just new to 240's.

The milage is a little high, but the car is 15 years old...check if the clutch is good and that it runs pretty good. Look for rust on the frame and in the hatch...check where the spare tire is you might find a surprise...a big puddle from water leaking...common problem. If its an SE with Hicas and ABS, it should have an LSD...check the differential, there should be an orange sticker...I paid about 900 every six months for liability on AAA and im 16...it varies the insurence shouldnt be that bad...Thats pretty much it...1000 isnt bad if all checks out well, you can bring him down for 9/800 though...Good luck

thanks for the reply. The insurance will be on my dads name. He has a clean record and hes 61 years old. Should be cheap right? Arent all the fastbacks SE's? Is the motor a SOHC or a DOHC? What kind of power does it put out?

Lets see...I can answer a few of ur ?'s...
1. Dont think it will have lsd b/c only the ealry 240's with hicas(4 wheel steering) come with it...unless of course it does have hicas...
2. My insurance is right around 200...but im only 19...
3. As long as the body is decent and not horribly rusted(generally on the rear of the hatch, especially if it has a spoiler) and the motor i running...ya know fairly well without eating up oil or coolant...then $1000 sounds like a good deal to me, id prolly offer him $800 though to start, but I would definately pay $1000 for it...I paid $1500 for mine..
4. As for the mileage its just like any other car and depends on how its driven...what exactly do you plan on doing with it though? Definately to many miles to try to build that motor up if your wondering that..
5. Roughly 140hp and 150tq capable of high 15's with an excellent driver otherwise usually lower 16's..weighs roughly 2600-2700lbs..About 22-28mpg depending on the driver and of course how the motor is running..
6. Hope that helps, but yea sounds like a good deal to me

Thanks for the answers. How do I find out if it has Hicas? I will just be using it as a daily driver with I/E only.

the 1990 is a sohc
the mileage is high but main thing is rust.
honestly i'd only get that car if i could get it for 850 because i'd have a turbo engine in it within a month.
