Looking at a '89 240sx (turbo 24, sr20det swap? Total costs?)
Hey all. I just got done looking at a '89 240sx in pretty good condition. Im thinking the guy doesnt race it because the new exhaust he had put on has pipes the size of an older civic, sooo he wanst tooo into it =P
Anyways, its got about 150k on the clock so I would be either doing a rebuild with new internals depending on what is available or looking at the ver-so-popular sr20det swap.
Can anyone give me a realistic total cost of either of these options?

We need a lot more information then just you want to do a swap.
It all depends on what you want to add, DIY, quality of parts.
I don't know how long you have been into cars but if it is as long as your post count then you need to do a lot of reading before you dive head first into this.
There are a lot of options and a lot of aspects to modding a car.

Well. Okay first off, im only looking for mild hp, ie between 200-300hp.
Ive been told that the 2.4 engine is actually pretty solid under moderate boost and can take a pretty good beating, but obviously not to the levels as the SR20DET.
I guess what im saying, is how cheap could you get parts for turboing the 2.4(used, pulled, whichever) that will actually work reasonably well.
I assume parts+labor is gonna be between 3-4k for a 20DET swap, which seems to mean that is much more economical to do it yourself.
I have a daily driver, so Its not a big deal when something breaks/or if i have to spend alot of time on whatever process.
I guess what im worrying, is how does the stock block handle moderate boost over a longer preiod of time. Also, what about internals/etc available for the block.

basic sr20det swap will run you around $2000-$3500 depending where you get it from, and if you get a front clip or not.. that's no including all the other stuff you need, ie. gauges, exhaust, filters, fluids, ... stock about 180-190whp
ka, you're probably looking at the cost to be more, but you'll make a lot more power...if you rebuild the engine with stonger internals probably around $1000-$2000 depending on parts for the engine.. new rods, pistons, headgasket, cam, valves, ect.. then you'll need a turbo kit.. so probably around $2000-$3000.. so basically..
180whp sr20det $3500+ complete
250+whp ka24e for about $4500+ (if you build the engine, cheaper if you rebuild it to oem specs, but can't handle as much boost)

Wow I hope your talkin for just the motor. To do it right your lookin at $4500-5500 and most likly more money on top for labor.
Heres a quick break down for how much it would cost based on what I did with my swap.
Sr20det hand picked.................................$3000
fmic.............................................. ..............$350
Fmic Pipe's............................................ .....$250
New clutch............................................ .....$200
Resurfaceflywheel................................. .....$50
Bov............................................... ..............$250
Turbo Timer............................................. ...$100
Boost controller........................................ ..$100
Boost guage............................................. ..$70
electric fans.............................................. ...$150
fan switch............................................ ........$50
vlsd.............................................. ...............$300
Air intake............................................ .........$150
new feul pump............................................$1 00
Theres $5120 right there with no labor!!! I'm not trying to be -ve, I'm just saying make sure you understand what you getting yourself into and that you have the money to finish it. I ran out of money very fast because I didn't plan it all out 1st.
just my 2 cents.

Thats why I came here! =P I need honest to god #s on what itll take to get done right hehe. I have no garage ergo no engine hoist so Id be paying for the swap. Though the guy whod do it is reasonably cheap on the labor end.
See, if i purchase the car, I wanna get everything done in short order and not have it sitting there and going 'some day'... like a few certain people I know heh.
Thanks for the replies guys.
