Is there any way you can tell if its ODBI or II while the engine is out of the car? The parts car I bought (89 hatch) had a twin cam from a 95 swapped into it, and the car it came out of is long gone, so checking VINs, second o2 sensors and butted cats doesn't do me much good.
Anyone have any ideas?

If it was swapped into the other car, and ran correctly it shouldn't really matter because if it was OBDII they would of had to made it work like an OBDI

from my research.. the easiest way to decipher the obd saga is to look at how many wires are on your existing oxygen sensor and harness. If its 1.. its obd1.. if its 3.. obd2

if the engine is out of the car.. look for the oxygen sensor harness.

OBD2 o2 sensors also have many cables on them, while the obd1 has only one. OBD2 engines have more bolts on the valve cover than the OBD1. OBD2 are better, obd1 are easier. OBD1 rocks, obd2 sucks...... b/c I have obd1 and I say so.

I've found a big diference in the two engines!!!!!!!

If you go to my profile and read my other post, you'll se that recently, I blew my engine. as a result I bought a 95 engine. thsi one after opening it, I saw that it was also shot. So the guy took it back and gave me another engine from a 95. now this one as I saw it compared to the other 95, I imidietly knew it was a OBD2

So the universal answer has been discovered: how to know if your engine is OBD2 or 1?????? Look at the distributor, if it has 4 spark plug camles comign out its obd2 since the coil is INSIDE the distributor. If it has 4 cables and 1 in the midle going to a Coil outside then its OBD1!!!!!
Yay all migthy joel of knowlege!!!!!

Now my car is OBD1, so my next post will be this sticky:
"How to install a OBD2 engine into a OBD1 harness!"

I thought it was s13's that had the external ignition coil while all s14's had the ignition coil in the distributor

sorry to burst your bubble, but i have a OBDI (manufactured 9/94)and have an internal coil.
i believe that's a S13/S14 difference.

as someone else pointed out above, the difference is in the number of wires on the O2sensor.
