My sift **** is stuck!!! I think I'm gonna cut it off! instand $0 short shifter haha

Hey Fella's, Well I bought a new Momo shift **** and I can't get off the stock ****. I almost +ve it twists off but it wont. I even put a set of water pump pliers on that beast and it just started to turn the shift shaft. Any ways I had enough of this twisting and prying crap. I think I'm just gonna cut it off. the new shift **** monts with set screw's so I don't need to worry about cuting off the threads on the stock shaft. It will reduce the shift throw some aswell. I think this should work, not as good as a short shift kit but is $0 and it will make me happy cutinng off that old ****. any ways I thought I would just post this for fun. I'm sure theres some mixed opinions on cutting down the shifter so lets here them.

later days

Josh

p.s I think I just figured out to how to make the letters different colors . we'll see if this works

it wont make your throw any shorter, just the height of the ****, i wouldnt like it but its your car so if you think you would like it that short then go for it and good luck, i had a friend cut a **** off one of his cars, all i remember about it was it sounded easy but it was a *****!

Yeah that's what happened to me as well. What I thought would take five minutes, ended up in a trip to the auto shop because I didn't have a dremel at the time. So I paid some guy to basically gring through all of the plastic so I could get to the shifer. Of couse I ended up replacing the whole unit later with a OBX short shifter, but yeah that sucked.

If the actual shifter shaft is spinning while you're trying to take the shift **** off, you proke something.

Also, like peacekeeper said, the only short part will be the stick's height - the shifer will still require the same amount of throw as a stock, uncut shifter.

like l2aine said, the shifter itself shouldn't be turning. on my 91' i had no problem manually twisting off the shift ****. (did that to put in a leather shift boot from a 300ZX). i think i'm gonna cut the shifter down also, not for the throw, but for the look, and easier access to the radio buttons....don't feel like paying $180 for a B&M short shifter.

Hey, believe me i know what your going through, I had the same problem getting my shift **** off of my 95. It seems like there must have been some type of adhesive because it's ridiculous. If you can get some BIG vise grips and just go at it for a little you should get it. I don't know how much your shaft is twisting, but mine looked like it was going to twist before i got it off too. I also dont know if your gonna wanna cut the shifter, but thats up to you. Good luck with it.

I have a 96, and I think I almost popped a blood vessel in my head, trying to get mine off. I dont have any advise, I just manhandled the thing.

Well I wont be able to go work on it for a few days, The Cars at my parents house so i don't have time to drive down there right now. I'm almost 100% sure that the shaft was starting to turn. I took the hole thing out of the car when I pulled the engine so I think I will put it in the vice and try to turn it off 1 more time. If it dosen't come off My Dad has this sweet little Snap-on hand held mini grinder. It has a cuting wheel on it and will cut through that shaft no problem

Okay this was covered before and it's getting to the point where this thread is mirroring another one.

Dude, taking off a shift **** is not rocket science (as Hyjynx said).

http://www.club240.com/forums/showth...ght=shift+****

Read that thread, try everything suggested. If it doesn't work, then stay stock or buy another car, or something.

EDIT:
>> Re-opened.

Don't take it so personal jbask...
