Question New guy here... looking for some info

Alright, here's the deal. I'm originally a Honda guy, with two CRXs, one with a motor swap, body kit, blah blah blah (see sig). I've got about $4000 coming my way in January and I've been kinda thinkin about getting a different car, and I really like the 240/silvia. I curious as to what year 240 I should be looking for, and also what are the typical motor swaps and their respective average prices. I have no problem with an older model, as I already and 88 and an 89. I did a search already but I couldn't really find anything that gave me the info I was looking for.

first off, welcome to the boards. second, how well did u search?

http://www.club240.com/forums/showth...motor+AND+swap

found that thread (where someone asked pretty much the same question about swaps) in about 45 seconds. here's the actual search (using "what AND motor AND swap"):

http://www.club240.com/forums/search...der=descending

in the first post, u'll find the motor swaps available. after u look through that, then u can search for relative pricing on those options (yes, it's all been covered here a time or ten thousand). once u've looked through everything, if u still have questions unanswered (or are unclear about something u've read, feel free to ask. no one here is "too good" to answer ur questions, but some folks do get tired of answering the same questions over and over and over and over and over and over (get the point?) and over and over...

as far as which one to get? this has been asked before also. to paraphrase: get whichever one u like best, regardless of logical or illogical reasoning. any model can be made to do amazing things. best of luck...

Welcome to the boards!!! Deciding on which year, model, etc. is completely up to you and your opinions. Any year, model, etc. has it's different qualities and flaws for each person. But......happy hunting.

Hey Sil40, on your post................................

For $4000 I'd look into possibly an S13 model (89-92), 5-speed, your choice of coupe or hatchback. It's possible to find S14 models (95-98) in coupe only for that price, but chances are they're going to need some work on them since the average price I've seen on a decent 95 is around $6000 or so. I got lucky and found an S14 SE model (5 lug hubs, preferred by many S14 owners) for $4100... but the paint needs work and I drove 768 miles round-trip to get it (it was on sale in Pheonix, AZ).

Either model will be great though. The S13 has the benefit of having the lighter chassis, relatively cheaper parts (compared to the S14) and the DOHC versions have the same engine as the S14; whereas the S14 will definitely have lower "original motor" mileage, as well as the newer look to it.

As for engines, there's 4 common off the top of my head:

1) Die hard KA owners live and die by the stock 4-cylinder KA24DE 2.4L DOHC engine (as well as some KA24E SOHC's). There's a good selection of aftermarket parts for this engine, including bolt-on turbos and such.

2) Most common swap - 4-cylinder SR20DET 2.0L DOHC Turbo, which is the stock 240SX engine in Japan. Aluminum block, track proven, and can cost you anywhere from $2500 to $5000 with all the bells and whistles, installed. 91-97 Nissan Sentra/200SX SE-R's in the U.S. had this engine minus the turbo part (SR20DE) and being a previous owner, I can give nothing but a thumbs up to this engine. Since the turbo version of this engine was stock for Silvia's in Japan, it's as close to "drop-in" as you can get... even easier than the common B16 swaps that Honda guys do.

3) RB25DET - 4-cylinder 2.5L DOHC Turbo, originally from a Japan market Nissan Skyline. It's been done, but takes fabrication and more work to pull it off. Kind of akin to an H22 swap in a Civic.

4) CA18DET - 4-cylinder 1.8L DOHC Turbo, origin not sure (I think the lower model Silvia Q's had this engine?) Similar in effort but slightly lowe in price compared to the SR20DET.

If I missed anything above, forgive me - it's all coming from my memory, not from spec sheets

Something interesting: Both S13/S14's at my insurance company (Geico) are classified as regular passenger cars, not sports cars - which means cheaper insurance too!

If they only knew...

damn, you two are machines.
I'm a huge KA fan, and plan on going KAT, our engines are great for that, but seems how you've done swaps you might want to get a clip thats already setup for turbo and everything.

and Sil40_Mayhem, looks like a newcomer is right on your tail, heh
