OBD1 vs. OBD2

Any difference in getting things smogged in California? I really like the 97-98 front end, but they're obd2, and I have heard that they are harder to get smogged with mods. Any thoughts?

What kind of mods are you talking about? Buy an early '95 and do a Kouki front end conversion...

I mean turbos, etc. I've heard that with OBDII, if you have any mods at all visible, they'll automatically fail you, even if you pass the actual smog part, but with OBDI they just stick the sensor up your pipe, and if the gasses are okay away you go.

I'd bet if you took it to one of those shady shops somewhere your car could pass. There just might be a hmmm... I guess you could say surcharge. I wouldn't know though. I've just heard that......

Yeah, I've talked to a few guys that live in cali, it can cost $200 to pass a car, but the state's been trying to press charges on a few guys who got caught, sucks for us. What I HATE is that they care, who gives a rip as long as the gasses coming out are okay, geez, fricken liberal politicians putting their noses where they don't belong...

Ok, enough with this "treehugger" talk... The government isn't going to give into a such a small group and make such a drastic change. The fact is, California has a HUGE polution problem and they are doing what they can to lessen it. Would you want to walk outside of your house into a thick brown fog? No, I didnt think so. So, SHUT IT...

i guess you could give the guy a pair of benjamins and ask him to "clean it up for you" and it sounds like its worth it if you live in cali- but i dont know , i live in florida, land of the unresticted and untested.

im all for clean air laws... but when i see SUVs with no gas guzzler penalty due to the sheer overweight classification, old diesels puffing soot or all the smoke stack factories in long beach, it makes me wonder if theyre really doing all they can. cars gets the blame for all the polution and it seems everything else is overlooked.

That's not my point, my point is that as long as the gasses are okay, then why do they care what you do under the hood? If the hydrocarbons, particulates etc are okay, then who gives rip? It has no real purpose and just makes things difficult.
