well, I was talking about to my parents tonight about how I was at a parking lot last week sliding around, when it was raining and a cop pulled up, but didn't do anything... I showed my parents some drifting videos, and we watched Fomula D on G4 tv... my Mom was all for it and was acually telling me to build my car up for drift and to get into it, and get sponsored... I was shocked, I couldn't believe she acually wants me to get into it.,... I really want to, and I try, but around here it's very difficult... any of you guys parents or family encourage this crazy motorsport?

I don't know where to start other than cones in empty parking lots, rain, gravel, dirt, snow, ect... there's no drift tracks even close as far as I know... so I guess I'll just work with what I have, and start building up my car.. I need coilovers first though. I'm thinking about going with Megan Racing Coilovers, I've heard good things... i'll have to search around for some info on decent ccilovers.... my car isn't going to be strictly drift though... as daily driven a lot.. so I kinda need to deciede on an engine sometime... I kinda wanna build and turbo the ka, and make it rev happy... that could be fun..

oh and another thing... does HICAS really effect a drift that much? because I really haven't noticed anything, whether it be wet, or dry out.. going from one drift to another seems to be fine..

 

My parents are kind of split on drifting and motor sports in general. My dad's all for it, he had a couple british sports cars in the 70's and said he used to love to "get the tail out and steer the car with the gas pedal". He thinks drifting is pretty cool and he recognizes the skill it takes, but he doesn't really see a point in doing it competitively. He encouraged me to go to a parking lot and whip the car around so i could get a feel for where my car loses traction, which is especially helpful when theres 6 inches of snow on the road. My mom on the other hand thinks im going to kill myself and cringes every time I talk about drifting or driving fast in general.

Unfortunately I can't really answer any of your questions since I'm still a beginner to drifting and recently borrowed some cones out of a dumpster for more parking lot fun.

 

i havn't started drifting yet but probably will soon. But my dad just say keep you eye open for cops. and be careful.. And my mom is like you shouldn't be doing it >.. But she knows im not going to stop.. My dad is as crazy if not more crazy then me when we are in cars lol. you should see what we do to rental cars ..

 

^ haha, my family is the exact same way... dad owned 2 mustang gt's and loves cars and driving fast... average speed in his 96 explorer is about 85mph. But my mom hates driving over the limit, it scares me when she actually does, grips the wheel like we're going 160.

Anyways .. my Dad is cool, he thinks it would be awesome, he just wants me to be careful. My mother, insists that while i live in her house i will not do so much as speed.
I think that if i explain how the skill could save my life someday, and call it "defensive driving" like Bob Bondurant, I might be able to get away with it.

my brother was a drifter in japan...then he crashed his precious 180. hehe. i liked his first 180 the best.
crashed on the freeway cause of some other driver in front of him screwed him up.
anyway yeah, i guess he supports drifting.

 

if you really want to become a professional drifter.. take some racing courses. Understanding lines and taking corners full speed grip will help you with any motorsport including drifting. That's why you see a lot of top competitive drifters that also compete in other motorsports like Nascar, Formula, JGTC(super GT) LeMans and other racing venues that doesn't have anything to do with drift.

 

I wish I could have that kind of support I told my mom I wanted to take racing lessons and she straight up laughed in my face no wonder I had a fuc ked up childhood.
