Question Questions About Taurus Electric Fans

Hey guys, I was wondering about a few things on this SHO electric dual fan setup I got off a junked car today...

On one fan there is a long rectangular box that goes in between the fan motor and the plug for the power, does anyone know what this is? I know it can be taken off, but should it be?

Also, the thermostat that is built into the shroud, should that be used, or does it kick on too early or late? I am going to be using an aluminum Koyo setup and wanted to know if the thermostat would get an accurate reading or not? I know a few of you enthusiats have used the SHO unit so I figured I would pick one up today at the car guy's Toys R Us and ask questions later!

Thanks in advance,
-George

C'mon guys I know some of you have these fans on your car! I tried searching on some blue oval sites but couldn't find anything as to what the rectangular thing is. I'm guessing that it could be a relay possibly? And do you guys know what the thermostat kicks in at?
