Then tell us what magical insight you have into the 6 speed that no one else has. Face it there fragil little gears that won't take a beating. It's a matter of they crammed an extra gear into the same size housing.

 

whatever. i've looked into the 6speed and have friends who have looked into it. my opinion of it is the same opinion that i have been posting. junk. live with it.

how are they going to find out what year then engine is made?
are they going to take out your engine and look for the year of manufacture? no. there are plenty of S13 motors that are just as reliable as the S14 engine. remember, the S13 chassis was still in production up until '97 which appeared in the '98 180SX's.

In all reality they arent going to likely know if its an older engine. If your refering to cops, might they?, Yes.
If your refering to a liscensed inspection station? They should.
Hmm, and doesnt it also say the reasons "I dont believe", and "Thats my opinion" ??....So now you are argueing my opinion?

Junk-do you know the definition of Junk? Do you honestly think Nissan put a "JUNK" tranny in the S15, the finest platform of all the S Chassis cars? how are they going to find out what year then engine is made?
And yes i can find you plenty of statements about that being a complete misnomer about the tranny being weak. Its all a comparison issue...what are you comparing it to?

 

Which ever chassis you pick, IMO go for the S13 engine. The "high port" intake manifold design flows more air than the S14's "low port". Also I hear the wiring of the VTC system is a SOB to hook up, even heard stories of the VTC not working properly, at all and failing. I just don't think the engine is worth the extra crap that it gives you. Oh and another thing I just read that the S13has better low end torque, reaching it's max 800 rpm sooner.


EDIT: S14's and S15's share the same design differences to the S13 that I wrote about above.

Well I've heard all the hoopla about the s15 gears and I'm in the middle of the seesaw I read an article a while back that the gears are crap and all this. Then recently the POOPERSTREET magazine had an article w/ a s15 pushing 425hp and they mentioned the dreaded gears are no problem...

....."It's been said that Nissan's new six-speed gearbox is weakly constructed and destined to break at 350hp. With figures well over 420 horses, this s15 puts those rumors to rest." ... pg.82 April 2002

...in the words of RIKDADDY of POOPA STREET MAGAZINE. So, who is really to know how good/bad those gears are. Regardless, of the gears I'll take a s14a w/ a sweet little bb turbo on the sr20 and it would be all grinz...I just like the body design, factory it's a good canvas to work w/ the s13 is more like a hobbie car to work with....that's why I own both.....That's the easy way to solve things.

 

Ask around, as time has gone by the opinion of the 6 has changed...It was ,imo, a drastic slander to knock the 6 when it was new, and since it was only in the s15, it was basically new. Over the years it seems that more and more people have expressed the opinion that the tranny is not "Junk", and maybe that was too harsh. No it isnt the greatest tranny in the world. And yes im sure it has some week points to it, but it is not "Junk". If it was, Nissan would have stopped putting it into cars very quickly. Im sure Nissans R&D team did work on that tranny just like they did with their other products.
I havent however heard anybody that has a six speed s15 tranny knocking it. Its interesting. I dont know who the people are who are convinced its crap, but it seems like they never had one themselves...

Everyone does have there own opinion on the 6-speed S-15 tranny. But my opinion is its not junk and its just right for a daily driver like myself. But then again nobody can really talk about this unless they have one and tried it out for themselves (including myself).

How did this thread end up talking about the S-15 tranny I thought this was a "S-13 vs. S-14" thing.

Well, I got rid of my two 1990 240sx with redtops in them and I purchased myself a 1996 se 5-speed awhile ago. I was thinking of getting a blacktop in it and even though they are newer and whatnot I'm really into the black tops. I've just been researching them lately and trying to make up my mine. I know how good the redtops are and I haven't tried out a blacktop yet.
