Salvage Title
Salvage Title
Sup guys, i went out Monday with my dad to go look at a S14 to buy. When we got to the guys house and looked at his owner's certificate it said Salvage title. The guy was saying it was a salvage because the car got stolen and the seats were jacked. Me and my dad didnt think that was right so we just took off. The guy was asking $5300 for the S14 with a salvage title. So my question to you guys is, What makes a salvage title? Would seats gettin jacked make it a salvage? IMO i dont think so.
i guess in my opnion..
a salvage title is when an in surance company didnt want to pay the cost of the repairs on the car and declare it totaled...
if the car was just jacked for a few parts then technically it dont seem "totaled" to me.
so mabey there was alotta exterior damage, paint refinishing and stuff of the sort.
if i were you i would take it to a good shop and have it checked for frame damage to see the extent of the insurances cheapness
but that's just me

Like the rude one said, the car has been totalled.
For that money, you can find one that has a clean title.
Get the VIN and run it through carfax, they'll tell you exactly why the salvage title was issued.

What could have happened was the car was stolen and by the time they found it the insurance already issued a check for the car. Therefore maybe only the seats were stolen and they bought it back from the insurance for like 2 grand. Thats what happened with my boy and his GSR. But yeah I would not buy a car for that much with a salvage title.

yea there can be several issues regarding why the car has a salvage title. best bet is go to carfax and check it out. but if you are considering buying the car... INSPECT EVERYTHING ON IT! i bought my old 00 civic si with a salvage title because the car was stolen and turned up a week later with only the front lights/bumper/hood/side skirts taken off of it... if the car looks good, and you can get the guy down another 2 grand, then buy it... if not, then wait.
From owning a salvage title car before I'd say don't give him a dollar over half of blue book. Fact is, regardless of what happened, a salvage title car is impossible to sell so you should also be sure u'll never wanna sell this car.

justin has a point, RUN THE VIN #
RUN THE VIN #
RUN THE VIN #

if you dont have access to carfax just post the VIN number in this forum and surely someone will send you the information on what happened
if the guy is lying and you still want the car you can USE his lie against him to bring the price down
and if he wont budge on the price tell him that your going to report him for trying to sale you a car HE KNEW was a lemon, or watever
they are called full-disclouser laws, use them to your advantage
He could be telling the truth. Theft recovery cars come back as salvage titles if more than $XXX worth is taken out of the car. Either way insurance companies don't like salvage cars and neither do I. Don't even pay more than half of the blue book. It's not even worth that much.
It can be worth it to buy a salvage car if you KNOW WHAT YOURE GETTING INTO!!! check everything. ever see those carfax commercials??? things like that DO happen! find out what happened and then go back and bring the price down. Be sure you will never sell this car... cause you probably woln't be able to and even if you do you will get nothing for it

The only thing wrong with the salvage title is that to get it registered you have to take it to a certain shop and they go over the car top to bottom and left to right. There cant be anything wrong with it AT ALL. It is like building a car from scratch. They will check all vaccum lines, brakes lines for proper pressure, power steering lines, all electircal, everything. Unless you want a hassle it isnt worth it.
