SR20DET's in California.....

Hey guys, need some help.

Was supposed to stay here in Japan for another 2 years....now with nearly no notice I am moving to Monterey, CA.

Would like to bring the 180SX with me....

What specifically are the issues with the SR20DET in California?

I know smog is a problem (supposedly) but is there a way to fix this? I am looking for a LEGAL way to import and keep the car stateside for 3 years, then will turn around and bring it back to Japan if I can get orders back over here.

My pay bracket is not the best in the world and either way (buying a car in CA or bringing mine with me) is going to cause problems....so I'd rather keep my car.

I have contacted the only RI on NHTSA.DOT.GOV that has an internet site (Motorex) and am hoping that they will contact me with some info and if it is possible how much it might cost.

If under $8,000 it will be a done deal.

Any info you guys might have would be greatly appreciated.

Well....

They don't mass import anything other than Skylines.

They may do (hoping) private importation.

Thanks for the well wishing on this though

Ummmm.....

No. Looking at the easiest way possible.

Got two backups in progress right now.

1. Forget it and sell the car.

2. Forget it and GIVE the car to a friend to keep for 3 years.

Not looking for the hassle of doing a conversion. It's either all or none.

You can import a car all day long, it's just driving that's illegal... so you can bring your car, tow it to your house, then make the car street legal, normally that's just lights and smog... then you can drive... seen a evo 6 imported in charlotte done that way.

but you prab gotta do it all over again in japan, when you get back

Prolly just gonna GIVE the car to a friend here to hang on till 2006. It'll give him 3 years to wrack some money up and not pay on anything, and I should get the car back with only about 25,000 kilometers more on it.

Plus he said he would fix anything that goes wrong and upgrade. First thing on his list is replace the NISMO super single with an OS Giken or ORC Twin plate....

I'm guessing I'll end up in a 93-95 Astro Van just to relax in until I make my return to Japan in 2006.

Anyone wanna help you can write your congreeperson and complain about excess spending in the Military....my case in point

And I am not alone in this......lot of us lost orders that we had..on the pretense that they are helping our careers....yeah...navy+shore duty= no promotion in alot of cases.
