water leak from back hatch?
water leak from back hatch?
Good Morning all,
Here I am sitting at work and to kill time I need to ask for your advice. There's a leak in my car and I think I pin pointed where its coming from but I could be wrong. I noticed it only after I found a pool of water in the back foot rest area behind the front passenger seat. Followed the water trace to the rear seat belt assembly. I took off the assembly cover and noticed the water was dripping from the frame. I thought it was a gasket problem and I bought some gasket sealer and sealed the gasket at the top of the rear hatch. I thought that did the trick... but it's leaking again. I did a search and on nissan.ca, it said on 1993 240sx had a leaking rear wiper fluid gasket and to replace it.
Now here's the question..
How many people here have had this same issue? Apparently it was only on the 93's?? and replace the whole gasket? just the outer one or do they want me to replace the whole gasket and hose as well?
any suggestions will help.. I'm thinking of just trying to seal that gasket with the same gasket sealing product that I used on the other seal.
maybe I should just let the water leak in and buy a goldfish and have a pond in my car.. LOL

im facing the exact same issue currently what i did was rip out my head liner cause its nasty anyway started smelling moldy and so on im running a 92 hatchback i didnt do any research for it but i just found it myself in my case it was running into past where that set belt thing is and into my trunk wat a pisser. all in all i fixed most of it but i live in canada and currently we have some stupid rain streak going on its still a bit comming in but weather sealing stuff will do the trick the stuff you use for windshield repair etc. its almost all gone in my car there is still a bit more i need to do but it sould be fine once this is done try the same smear it up and leave your head liner out for a while make sure its all dry and let it rain (or use the hose) on just that target area and see if it still comes in. hope my lesson enlightend you cheers!
edit:
psst. i live in Vancouver BC. PM me or something to chat (no other fellow BC'ers around in this joint.) lol

I think so far my sealing job is working.. but it hasn't rained hard for a while and today it's ACTUALLY sunny. i just used some sealer that i bought at Rona... it's not caulking.. it's an automative sealer. Maybe ill take a hose to my car since it need to be washed anyways.. but thanks for the response.
Yeah not too many 240's in lower mainland.. theyre not like civics, not that big of a community out here. i'm still learning about my 240 and its capabilities. and not too many people here from Lower mainland, and i'm not a huge fan of NWN.com or RS but i do go there sometimes.
just an update for anyone with same or future problem.
okay... it rained pretty hard last night and my sealing job or where i sealed didnt work as i thought it did. i dont think its leaking from the gaskets i sealed. perhaps the water could be coming in from where the rear hatch lift support arm is connected to the frame. i really dont want to rip out my sealing liner but that might have to be the case because i really can't find the problem.
will give future updates.

LOL.. here's another update on my leaky 240.
i found a puddle at the bottom of my trunk where the spare tire belongs.. did some research. could be two problems.. either the rubber/foam stock spoiler or a old gasket for the tail lights.. can it get any worse..
i hope its just the gasket/seal and not the spoiler, cuz it would be cheaper to repair that leak then removing spoiler and taking it to a body shop to fill the holes...
still havent had time to properly look at my original leak... i can only laugh at the situation instead of getting frustrated.. that will come later when i can find the damn source of the leak... oh called some place that specializes in car leaks.. $600 CDN to find and stop the leak and comes with guarantee... pffft.

skrew that hommie, I know civic's out here are all the rage garbage car IMO, anyway's so far i have done all this to stop "all my leaks" and i have been through all the possible ones here is a list of things and things to do
Rear spray nozzle :
rip out head liner (only few screw's and pop in's) clean the surrounding area's outside the car(when dry) with acetone then clean the inside also free it from all dirt etc... get some (from canadian tire, where i work) ha ha this weather sealing stuff in a red tube the color will be yellow when applying but who cares. made by permatex. smear this crap all over the bottom of the gasket of the spray nozzle and in between the gasket. now even if it squirts out let it dry like that for a few days then peel it off. also try putting this on the inside with an ear swab do it once all around and let it dry come back again do it a second just for reasurence. it worked for me!.
second:
your trunk seal. this may also be a cause for you. it was for me water rush's down the "drainage" so to speak and will rush over the old seal the rubber seal its kinda old, brital etc i did a replacement had to order it from nissan but then used that rip off the old one and do the same thing seal with a little of that yellow junk in the first problem area. and do it evenly should work great.
EDIT:
another thing to add here is that the lock in your trunk can be raised and lowered. to save you aprox 160$$$ see if you lower the lock it makes a difference it may not leak "as much, or at all" depends on how worn the seal is. leaving it (the lock) to low makes it extremly difficult close the trunk because it can not reach proporly the lock to the hinge on the lid.
third:
the unavoidable rush (of water) you will get fto constant water pressure etc to the the stock spoiler. this is a problem on most 240's that i have seen it seems unavoidable. you basically have to take off the spoiler with a wrench and see what you are dealing with if it is not to bad with rust etc you should be fine in just cleaning it up with a dremel or something grind away the rust and temp paint it over until you one day get a fresh paint job. and getting some sealant again cleaning it free of dust grease etc...if however your's is in shape of mine,(nasty) then you have to A) fill the holes and leave them closed with no spoiler or B) get a new spoiler and fill the holes and put on a new look. it all depends on how bad the spoiler is if the bolts that are supposed to hold it on are rusted through like mine. or the trunk lid itself if its terrible a junk yard may be able to help with less hassle etc. right now until summer or spring my spoiler is just sitting there(still stock) sort of just clipped on and sealed mostly. until i change it when its more dry i have a new shiny one that i picked up from Metrotown in a place where i get hook up's for my car.
hope this helps.
take a look and see if you can do all this let me know how it all turn's out man. peace

Hey, i actually had a day off and it was GORGEOUS outside. so i decided to rip out my rear interior. Gonna make this as detailed as possible for others in the future.
here's what i checked WITH THE REAR INTERIOR GUTTED. my rear seat was drenched.. and i wipped up all of the water that was under the seat.
checked the sunroof drains. ran a flexible wire down there to see if i had any clogs. then poored some water down the holes to see if that would cause leakage (thinking the hose connecting to the water escape hole came off). everything checked out to be fine.
since it wasnt raining for the first friggin time for god knows when and actually had a DRY car, i poored water down the roof with hatch door up to see where the water was coming from. turned out that the rush of water was entering two places. 1.) from gasket/weather stripping and 2.) i found a hair line crack (or over lapped of unsealed metal in the body frame) above and to the right of the right electrical wire (i think thats what runs through that rubber hose) gasket/weather stripping (looks round). so two things were happening. water wash coming in from the weather stripping and from the unsealed hairline opening.
so i took off the weather stripping and cleaned it out and dried it as well as all the surfice areas that came into contact with the weather stripping. I went to Lordco and baught Silicon Black (the stuff they use one windshields) and put a new bead of silicon in the gasket and re-applied the gasket. i also, for extra safety, siliconed the two round rubber electrical seals. i generously siliconed the hairline crack, and for extra measures i applied silicon around the base of the weather stripping like how you would around a bath tub or sink. since this stuff in black and remains flexible, it looks good.
Good thing it was sunny out to allow that stuff to dry properly.
Hopefully this works. but i have to wait until it rains hard.. but that wont be to long here in the lower mainland.....
as for the spoiler. as of right now im not too concerned. i was checking around and some sites said the spoilers had 9 screws holding it on, mine only had 5.. so im not sure if its different or if the number of screws matter. i looked at the spoiler and it seemed as though it had channels to allow the water to escape cause i have like a 1/8 on an inch of space between the spolier and body where i can see the metal brackets. IM ASSUMING here that if i can see it then water can escape and not just sit there. i may be wrong though. the screws that are holding my spolier werent rusted either.
i think the water at the bottom of my trunk is from the original leak. i think on my next day off ill take off my spoiler to see if there is any rust.
i will repost, i guess this is turning out to be my little adventure/journal, after the next big rain storm to see if my siliconing did the trick. I HOPE THIS WORKS.
