is a welded differential safe/good for the track and for the street?
is a welded differential safe/good for the track and for the street?
was thinking about having my differential welded since a brand new lsd costs too much money. but before i decide, i have some questions. i was thinking if having my differential welded, it would act like an lsd and give me more traction? i no having welded diff helps for drifting but i dont know if it helps for road racing. i also heard that if you weld it, driving becomes really dangerous on the streets specially if it rains, true or not?
zenkisliders got one, doesnt seem that bad, you can kick it out anytime you want, as long as your careful it wont kick out on you or anything if you dont want it too. and yea youll have to spend money on tires alot.
its not near as bad as the "hype" has it built up to be. How much power do you have?
no it doesnt just kick out, you still have to make it come out.
in the rain, no it doesnt just kick out. you have to want it to come out.
DD is perfectly ok, some pavments make a sqeaky sound, most dont they just go ch ch ch ch ch while sharp cornering, sometimes it can be a little jerky but again it depends on what kind of pavement it is....
i say get it, its not bad at all, just make sure you have someone weld it that knows what there doing I.E. luke at shockdrift.com

i,ve got 140whp. so out of all your replies, i guess it's ok for the track and for the street but ill spend money on tires, which prolly in the long run it would be better to get a new lsd right?
thanks to all of you for replying. great help.

well bro it depends what you want a 2way is sort* of similar to a welded diff, but it allows the wheels to slip just a tad.
i had no issues with my welded diff ( that i welded my self) and i drove in all kinds of rain. also someone said earlier you still have to kick the rear out. It blew only becuase i welded it with a flux welder and the penetration was not deep at all. I'm getting an tig welder soon.......... cant wait
if your not going to be drifting at least 2 times a week or in competitions don't do it honestly. its not something to do just to get cool points from
*should look up properties of 2way

ya if you arent going drift your use out of it dont do it, i wouldnt even get a 2 way. I think it would be best if you just got a good condition vlsd, or a 1.5way lsd. If you dont drift alot.
and yes 140 hp, if your an idiot and floor it around corners it still isnt just going to fly right out, like i said if you want it to come out, you will have to make it come out.

if you dont drift..dont get one
driving in the rain isnt bad..just drive slow and easy..let gas it through the turn..let off.
and who cares about the noise it makes..if you drift then you know how good it is

vlsd are seriously better suited for drag guys.
once the silicon really heats up, it unlocks. its not a good feeling at all. becuase when it unlocks it screws up control bad , i personally don't like the feeling.

Look into HLSD's (H) stands for helical.
HLSD's imported from the s15 silvia are the best to use with a much more efficient gearing ratio. Direct bolt ons to the s13 and s14 with minor modifications needed.
HLSD's last much longer than VLSD's.
It comes from the R200 diff housing/pumpkin (not the R200v which means a direct bolt in for 4 lug s13's without ABS) and you should be able to get it for roughly $350 used on ebay or other import shops.
If not to get a used HLSD, OBX makes a pretty reasonably well designed diff that mimicks the Hitachi version which is found in the s15 R200 diff's. OBX HLSD's are direct bolt in to the R200 diff found in 80% of USDM 240sx's.
Excellent understanding of the ratios of most Nissan diff's not included is the HLSD/R200
