2 timing questions for you pros out there.
i have a 93 koop. ka24de. stock motor
A) how can i inspect the timing tensioners to insure if they are working properly once taken off the motor? in particular im speaking of the lower timing tensioner. also, when replacing this tensioner, how is it supposed to be correctly placed? is it attached to the little swivel chain guide thats above and to the left of the crank sprocket? the fsm is a lil vague and i have stumbled upon numerous posts of the upper timing assembly, but not the lower and how its supposed to be replaced/inspected.
B) what is the size for the hex or allen key screw that secures the lower chain brace or bracket on the lower tensioner side?
if i am not being clear enough, please ask me to clear all of this up for you. im trying to re-assemble the ka so i can go back to school. ive pulled everything off and im ready to tackle the task of rebuilding. just want to be sure im going to put on parts that are in decent working order.

bump. wtf guys! has nobody on this forum attempted this project? i got my answer for Queston B, the size allen key you need is 6. my new problem now is that my motor in my car had completely different timing components then the 2nd blown motor i bought. im gonna have to take pics and start a new thread i guess, or this sub forum is just not visible. lol.

the tensioners are hydraulic and consist of a body (housing or whatever you want to call it) , and spring loaded cylinder. the cylinder slides out of the body and can be oiled to be tested. if the cylinder can be pressed into the body and slides back out on it's own then it's fine.
one side of the body has a small hole on the flat side that alows oil from the engine to flow to it though a hole on the block and head.

may take a while...
the timing gear that came off of my ka seems a lil weird. first off, the allen head bolts securing the two chain guides were badly stripped. and secondly, the tensioner on my block looks nothing like the two others i have. i bought another dohc ka motor that spun a bearing and had a rebuilt head (so im told) and ive torn that motor down too and taken off the timing gear. i also bought ebay replacement timing gear about 4 months ago. im not sure if i want to replace the timing stuff in the koop with the stuff of the spun bearing motor that had 205,000 on the odo or used the cheepy ebay timing stuff.
hopefully there will be a butt load of pics to follow. excuse my cell phone pics if they aren't up to par. its the only camera i have when im away from home.
jacked up oil strainer
lower timing gear from Koop's KA24de. this has the weird swing arm lookin thing on the tensioner and the one chain guide is made completely of plastic and uses allen headed bolts.
plastic backed chain guide.
timing gear from bought KA24de w/ 205,000 and spun bearing. doesnt really have any wear on it. no grooves in the plastic surfaces.
normal looking tensioner. ebay tensioner looks exactly like this one as well.
metal backed chain guide. also, this guide uses two 12mm bolts to secure it to the block. different from what came off the Koop's block.
both sets together. i hope its clear for your viewing pleasure.
the head that was supposedly rebuilt after 205,000 miles.
my parents garage mess. i do like how it looks tho. extra KA parts FTW!
a 7 bolt 4g63 that me and another friend just rebuilt. 2.2L, stage 2 HKS cams, and a couple extras. this motor used to run 470whp on the dyno and 91 octane with 2.0L pistons. the dummy that built it up and bored it out the first time used 2.0L pistons in a 2.2L engine. WTF? anyway, this should make more power.
hope u liked my show and it wasnt too slow.
hope they all load. im not good at this stuff at all.
