less that $100 s13 5-lug front hub conversion

this is for all us s13 owners who do not want to spend $400+ on ichban
5-lug front hubs or for us that are on a limited budget!

i have been doing alot of research on 5 lug hubs for a s13 and they have come to one conclusion buying the overpriced ichban front hubs and rear hubs.so me not wanting to buy the ichban hubs,i did more researched some more and came across a thread on nico club about going to tha local junkyard and getting infinity j30 front hubs and using them for an s13 for a five lug conversion for the front hubs.i already got the complete j30 setup yesterday!!!!

the whole conversion is pretty simple.

first go to a local junkyard and look for a 5-lug j30 with the front hubs and brake assembly still assembled.pull off the hubs and brakes and take them.if you are worried about the brakes the j30 rotors are about the same size as z32 300zx rotors.so they will work as good asthe the z32 rotors.for calipers you can use the j30"S or find z32 calipers in the same yard that you are at.do not forget to take the j30"s hub nut cover and the wheelbearing retaining clip(1.25in clip) !!!!!! you will need them!!

next when you get home from the junkyard find a place were you can get new s13 wheel bearings. nissan dealers will sell them and you can get them online.their about $65 depending where you get them.

now that you arer home from getting the bearings these are the tools you will need for removal of the s13 hubs and brakes.

19mm, 30mm, 32mm 1/2" drive sockets
1/2" drive ratchet
rubber mallet
flathead screwdriver
1/2" drive torque wrench

torques of interest:
wheel nut s13 75-87ft/lbs
brake caliper 65-75ft/lbs
lug nuts 80-85ft/lbs

now preperation for installation!
after taking off the s13 4-lug hubs have the hubs and hub bearings pressed out.Its a very simple fit to make this happen, just press out the j30 wheel bearings and press in the s13 bearings (seal side out!).
.it normally requires substantial force to get the old bearings out. When installing the new bearings into the hubs as per the FSM and using a 12 ton press it still required quite a bit of effort to seat the bearings.

now moving to the j30 hubs!

the j30 hubs will have a abs ring on them.if your s13 has abs leave the ring if it does not simply take it off!!

be sure to get the j30 hub nut cover as you will have to use that vs the s13's due to different cover diamater.due to the different cover design of the j30 hub vs the s13 hub you will have to grind off the taper of the wheel spindle, use of a grinder with control and patience is reccomended...do not damage the spindle threads.clean spindle with brake clean and dry to clear machined surfaces of debris from grinding which could lead to premature bearing failure.bolt up j30 brakes and line(you do not have to use j30 brakes you can use z32 front brake assembly).plum the system. and bolt up you 5-lug s14,z32,z33,or s15 wheels.and drive up and down your street(make sure to take turns as well) and if every thing works as planed (and it should if you did it right).you have less $100 5-lug front hubs!!! you still want to pay $400 for ichban front hubs?
i didnt think so!

finished product

iv also heard that its easier to get big brake kits for 5 lug due to jdm silvias being 5 lug. personally have not researched that though, just hearsay.
